COMPLINE is sung by the Schola Cantorum on Sunday evenings (October through April) at 9:00 P.M. at Christ Church, 141 East Avenue. Repertoire includes Gregorian Chant, and motets by Byrd, Gibbons, Lassus, Monteverdi, Palestrina, Parsons, Sheppard, Tallis, Tavener, Pärt and other notable composers.

ORGAN PRELUDES are played by Eastman faculty and students preceding Compline on all but the first Sunday of the month.

Abstract: Atmospheric N2 is a cheap, abundant resource with great potential for energy storage and chemical synthesis, but it is difficult to convert it into other compounds ("fixing" nitrogen). This seminar will describe the challenges and opportunities of nitrogen fixation, as well as my students' discoveries of how to break the N–N bond of N2 using homogeneous transition-metal complexes. In addition to new catalysts for producing ammonia, we have identified a new mechanism for sequential C-H activation and N-N activation to create C-N bonds. Detailed mechanistic studies reveal a cyclic reaction, which gives a route from atmospheric N2 and petroleum-derived arenes to substituted anilines. This is an important step toward preparing useful chemicals using air as a starting material.

The New Horizons Program began in 1991 at the Eastman School of Music under the guidance of Roy Ernst, now Professor Emeritus from that school. Since that time, the idea has been adopted throughout the U. S. and in Canada, resulting in the forming of more than 100 organizations.

While New Horizons was designed in particular for senior adults, there is no minimum or maximum age or ability requirement. All are welcome, especially beginners. Members include those with little or no experience, those who have postponed participating in an ensemble due to career and family, and seasoned musicians. All agree that New Horizons is a community of music-makers flourishing in a non-competitive, collaborative, and supportive environment.

The Rochester (NY) program includes beginning, intermediate and advanced bands, a Big Band, beginning strings, full and string orchestras, a chorus, and several chamber ensembles.

Who should take this course?
The American Heart Association’s BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

What does this course teach?
• High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
• BLS concepts from the Chain of Survival
• Delivering effective breaths or ventilations
• Importance of early use of and how to use an AED
• Performance as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
• Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults, children, and infants

Initial certification and recertification of healthcare providers
Upon successful completion of the course, students receive an AHA BLS Provider course completion card, valid for two years.

Cost: $80 for the course, plus $19 for the optional manual. Payment by cash, check, credit card, or 312 Requisition is accepted. Medical students at the University of Rochester have the course fee waived, but are responsible for the cost of the manual.

Juilee Thakar, PhD, University of Rochester, Department of Microbiology & Immunology

Bio:

Thakar received a bachelor's in microbiology and mathematics from the University of Pune in India and a PhD from the University of Wuerzburg in Germany. During her PhD and postdoc, she developed mathematical models of immune responses and signaling cascades involved in infectious diseases. For the past ten years, her group has been focusing on similar topics, developing methods to harness information from large-scale data and existing knowledge to investigate human immune responses.

Dr. Siu is a Professor in the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. He holds secondary appointments in the Departments of Medicine and Health Evidence and Policy.

He is a general internist, geriatrician, and health services and policy researcher. He is currently a Senior Associate Editor of Health Services Research and a past member and Chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Dr. Siu is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Recent advances in generative modeling have reshaped machine perception, enabling systems that not only recognize multimodal signals but also synthesize and manipulate them. For example, modern models can generate photorealistic images or clone voices with high fidelity. However, despite this rapid progress, current multimodal models remain fundamentally limited: they often lack spatial grounding, struggle to disentangle overlapping sound sources in complex scenes, and offer only coarse mechanisms for user control. These limitations represent a key bottleneck in moving from passive recognition to active, intelligent content creation.

To address these limitations, this thesis introduces a unified framework for controllable generative modeling, bridging the gap between multimodal perception and synthesis. Specifically, we aim to solve three fundamental challenges: 1) how to ground generative models in physical and spatial reality, 2) how to leverage generative priors for high-fidelity audio–visual separation, and 3) how to implement precise, task-agnostic control mechanisms.

First, I establish perceptual foundations through Egocentric Audio-Visual Localization, which mod- els spatial cues via egomotion, and Acoustic Primitives, a joint-anchored representation of human soundfields. These demonstrate that physical grounding can be learned directly from dynamic multimodal streams. Second, I shift from discriminative separation to generative modeling with DAVIS, a diffusion-based conditional framework, and ZeroSep, a training-free separator leveraging text-to-audio generative priors. Finally, I introduce task-agnostic control mechanisms: VisAH uti- lizes language and video for expressive audio highlighting, while FreSca employs frequency-space manipulation to enable training-free steering across image and video generation.

In summary, the contributions of this thesis chart a coherent progression from physically grounded perception to controllable generative synthesis. The resulting systems can localize, separate, and manipulate multimodal content, laying the foundation for future multimodal agents capable of reasoning over and creating long-form, open-world content.

During language comprehension, individuals can use contextual information to generate predictions about upcoming words. Numerous studies have examined how prediction impacts processing in real-time, but fewer studies have examined the downstream consequences of prediction during reading. My work examines the impact of prediction on later memory for words and sentences that were read. Additionally, recent work has identified a robust phenomenon: when participants read sentences in which the prediction is violated (e.g., “Father carved the turkey with a smile”), and are later tested on their memory, they often falsely remember seeing the predictable word (“knife”). One hypothesized cause of this phenomenon is that features of the predictable word are pre-activated prior to its occurrence, leading to encoding of the word into memory. I will discuss recent work conducted to test this hypothesis, in which I used representational similarity analysis of EEG data to examine neural pre-activation of the predictable word during reading, and if this neural pre-activation is related to later false memory. This research provides compelling evidence that predictions impact downstream memory, and that false memory for predictable words is likely due to encoding of pre-activated features into long-term memory.

Abstract: Reinforcement learning with multiple, potentially conflicting objectives is pervasive in real-world applications, while this problem remains theoretically under-explored. This paper tackles the multi-objective reinforcement learning (MORL) problem and introduces an innovative actor-critic algorithm named MOAC which finds a policy by iteratively making trade-offs among conflicting reward signals. Notably, we provide the first analysis of finite-time Pareto-stationary convergence and corresponding sample complexity in both discounted and average reward settings. Our approach has two salient features: (a) MOAC mitigates the cumulative estimation bias resulting from finding an optimal common gradient descent direction out of stochastic samples. This enables provable convergence rate and sample complexity guarantees independent of the number of objectives; (b) With proper momentum coefficient, MOAC initializes the weights of individual policy gradients using samples from the environment, instead of manual initialization. This enhances the practicality and robustness of our algorithm. Finally, experiments conducted on a real-world dataset validate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Short Bio: Jia (Kevin) Liu is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The Ohio State University (OSU) and an Amazon Scholar with Amazon.com. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech in 2010. From Aug. 2017 to Aug. 2020, he was an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Computer Science at Iowa State University (ISU). He currently serves as the Managing Director of the NSF AI Institute for Future Edge Networks and Distributed Intelligence (AI-EDGE) at OSU. Dr. Liu's research areas include theoretical machine learning, stochastic network optimization and control, and performance analysis for data analytics infrastructure and cyber-physical systems. Dr. Liu is a senior member of IEEE and a member of ACM. He has received numerous best paper awards at top venues, including IEEE INFOCOM'19 Best Paper Award, IEEE INFOCOM'16 Best Paper Award, IEEE INFOCOM'13 Best Paper Runner-up Award, IEEE INFOCOM'11 Best Paper Runner-up Award, and IEEE ICC'08 Best Paper Award. He has also received multiple honors of long/spotlight presentations at top machine learning conferences, including ICML, NeurIPS, and ICLR. His joint work with IBM Research was selected to receive the IBM Pat Goldberg Memorial Best Paper Award Distinction of Honorable Mention in 2024. Dr. Liu is an NSF CAREER Award recipient in 2020, a winner of the DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA) in 2024, and a winner of the Google Faculty Research Award in 2020. He received the LAS Award for Early Achievement in Research at Iowa State University in 2020, and the Bell Labs President Gold Award. Dr. Liu is the Lead Editor of the Special Issue on AI and Networking of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking in 2025. He is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking. He has served the TPC for numerous top conferences, including ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, ACM SIGMETRICS, IEEE INFOCOM, and ACM MobiHoc. His research is supported by NSF, DARPA, AFOSR, AFRL, ONR, Google, Meta, and Cisco.

Meet the moderator:

Elizabeth MacBride is an award-winning journalist and bestselling author whose work examines how capital, entrepreneurship, and innovation are reshaping economies in the United States and around the world. Her latest book, Capital Evolution: The New American Economy, was a national bestseller. Having reported everywhere from Idaho to the Arkansas Delta and from Cambodia to Gaza, Elizabeth brings a rare, on-the-ground perspective to the power of entrepreneurship and innovation to reshape society. She is an advocate for a fairer financial system that expands opportunity, strengthens democratic capitalism, and increases women’s economic power. She's also been a media entrepreneur herself, having worked on successful journalism startups over the years, and she led content for Wealthfront as the movement toward online investing took off.

Meet the panel:

Karla George ’21S (MBA) is the CEO of FLX AI, a Rochester-based company focused on de-risking and operationalizing AI by aligning business strategy, data reality, and technical readiness. She attributes FLX AI’s success to building strong, trust-based relationships, leading with integrity, and taking the time to deeply understand each customer’s business before applying technology.

Karla began her career in financial services at Guggenheim Partners and UBS before joining Sutherland Global Services. She later joined the University of Rochester’s Data Science Consortium, overseeing operations and playing a key role in positioning the organization for commercial growth and long-term sustainability. In 2021, she was instrumental in leading the consortium’s successful transition into FLX AI.

Committed to community and building connection, Karla serves as Co-Chair of the URochester Women’s Network, has mentored through the Greater Rochester Chamber’s CLIMB program, and sits on the Board of Trustees for the Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks.

Karla earned her bachelor’s degree from Siena College, where she was a dual Division I athlete, and an executive MBA from the Simon School of Business. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time in the Adirondacks with her husband and two dogs.

Rami Katz ’03S (MBA) is the CEO of Excell Partners, Inc., managing Excell’s due diligence and investment processes. Prior to joining Excell, Rami served as the director of technology commercialization at High Tech Rochester where he worked closely with entrepreneurs, researchers, and startups to evaluate the commercial potential of new technologies. Rami managed the creation of over 50 business plans that led to raising over $40 million in funding from venture capitalists, angels, and grants.

Rami is an attorney who led a litigation, banking, and corporate law practice in Israel, managing a legal team that directed the restructure of over $14 million in corporate and asset backed debt annually, while growing the group’s revenues by over 300%.

After launching his own legal and management consulting practice in Israel, he was one the founding members of a seed stage investment group, investing and assuming leadership roles in seed stage, technology ventures to provide financial and business development management. The group launched 12 high-tech startups focused on advanced materials, internet technologies, consumer electronics, and medical devices.

Rami earned his MBA from the University of Rochester and his law degree from the Tel-Aviv University in Israel.

Daphne Pariser ’17M (MS), ’21M (PhD) is the founder and CEO of HeronAI, where she is building the first decision intelligence system for the mid-market. HeronAI was born from her experience working with 189 companies, where she saw how fragmented data and analyst shortages quietly undermine critical business decisions. Trained at the University of Rochester for her PhD and MIT and Harvard for her post doctorate, Daphne focuses on rebuilding institutional decision memory, creating infrastructure that turns messy, real-world data into trusted, auditable action.

James Senall ’99S (MBA) is president of NextCorps which is committed to creating entrepreneurship and innovation-based regional growth. During his tenure, the organization has launched several new initiatives, including a software accelerator program, a clean tech accelerator, a statewide Entrepreneur-in-Residence program, and an optics, photonics, and imaging accelerator.

His prior experience includes co-founding the Rochester Angel Network in 2005, which he continues to lead as its managing director; experience with multiple startup companies; engineering and manufacturing roles at multi-billion dollar firms; and teaching graduate-level courses in tech entrepreneurship.

Jim has served in various board roles including chairman of the Business Incubator Association of New York State, board member of the New York State Economic Development Council, board member of several startups including Adarza Biosystems, VPG Medical, and Scout Space, Executive Committee member of the University of Rochester’s Tech Development Fund, Investment Committee member of Launch NY’s seed capital fund, and board member of Rochester Angel Network and the Rochester Angel Fund.

He holds a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology, and an MBA in marketing and entrepreneurship from the Simon Business School.

We have developed and tested an augmented reality environment for teaching electric fields, magnetic fields, and electromagnetic waves. We will demo the experience, discuss design and implementation, and present results from pilot studies.

About Matt

Dr. Matt Anderson has nearly three decades of experience in physics research and education. He is currently a Professor of Physics at San Diego State University, where for the last 25 years he has led a highly productive research group in ultrafast laser physics, optics, and physics education, garnering multiple research grants, publications, and patents (including the Learning Glass Lightboard). He has taught a multitude of course offerings, and is consistently one of the top-rated professors. In 2015 he was awarded the Senate Distinguished Teaching Award from the university which includes the title of “Senate Distinguished Professor.” He has given invited talks nationally and internationally, and his physics education channel on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@yoprofmatt) has garnered nearly 20M views and 225k subscribers (he just received YouTube’s Silver Play Button Award, to which his kids said “Dad, you finally made it!”). Dr. Anderson holds a B.S. in Physics from the University of California at San Diego, a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Oregon, a postdoctoral fellowship from the University of Rochester, and was a visiting faculty member at the University of Oxford. He has served as a member on the APS-FWS and the APS Distinguished Traveling Lecturer Committee. He is married with three kids, likes to surf, play guitar, hike, and play tennis.

Research:

Dr. Anderson’s research has been primarily in the area of femtosecond laser science with an emphasis on quantum optical processes, nonlinear optics, pulse measurement, and dynamic pulse shaping. Dr. Anderson was the first to demonstrate several key optical advances: squeezed light in quasi-phase matched waveguides, chronocyclic homodyne tomography, real-time ultrafast pulse measurement using SPIDER, and single-iteration optical compression. For the past dozen years he has been actively consulting/collaborating with InterOcean Systems LLC on optical techniques for oil detection, and recently was a PI (Co-PI Dave Pullman) on a grant from InterOcean to develop a standoff UV fluorescence detector. This work pioneered significant improvements in optical range and detector sensitivity, and the LED based prototype has detected crude oils from distances of 50 meters, a world’s first. In addition, Dr. Anderson was recently PI on an NSF grant to study the application of virtual reality to teaching physics concepts, particularly electric and magnetic fields. This work has the potential to vastly improve how students visualize complicated three dimensional vector fields, something traditionally difficult to teach via traditional two-dimensional textbooks and white boards.

The Robin Lynn Lecture in Urban Studies

Americans have most frequently understood the history of U.S. cities following a particular narrative, trajectory, and demographic or social lineage. From the first European colonists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, to the growing influx of African Americans in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. People from Latin America or of Latino descent are primarily recognized as recent arrivals, relative newcomers, and not fully authentic “Americans.” How deep do their roots and heritage stretch? How have Latinos shaped U.S. cities, urban dynamics, and our metropolitan areas long before the present? Historian Lilia Fernandez will offer some examples of their enduring impact and how it continues to shape US cities today.

Lilia Fernández specializes in the history of Latinos/as/x in the mid-to-late 20th century United States. Her research interests lie at the intersection of urban history, labor and working-class politics, and economic inequality. Her first book, Brown in the Windy City: Mexicans and Puerto Ricans in Postwar Chicago, focused on the migration and settlement of these two populations in the city’s central neighborhoods and the communities they formed.

More recently, Fernández has examined the history of Latinos in New Jersey. For six years at Rutgers University, she founded and led the Latino New Jersey History Project, documenting the state’s diverse Latino populations through student-led oral histories and web-based public history projects. She also collaborated with the Voces Oral History Center at UT Austin to document the experiences of New Jersey’s Latinos during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Her current research continues to examine Latino history in the Chicago area, focusing specifically on cross-ethnic interactions among Latinos, their labor politics, class dynamics, activism, and strategic articulations of a panethnic identity.

Before arriving at UIC, Fernández was previously Associate Professor of Latino and Caribbean Studies and History at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Prior to that she was Assistant and Associate Professor of History at The Ohio State University. Fernández received her B.A. at Harvard University; an Ed.M. at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; and her Ph.D. at the University of California, San Diego. She servers on the boards of several academic organizations and is a series editor for the University of Chicago Press’s Historical Studies in Urban America.

The Robin Lynn Lecture series explores key themes in urban studies and urban history. It brings together leading scholars and thought leaders to examine the historical, social, and cultural dynamics of cities, as well as the challenges and opportunities facing urban environments today.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly ubiquitous in everyday life and for professional purposes. GenAI technologies hold significant potential for enhancing research, teaching and learning but their use also introduces significant challenges. This lecture brings together relevant interdisciplinary theories and perspectives on migration, identity, mobility, and transnationalism. It underlines transnationalism as a mediating factor in the migrant’s quest for belonging and desire for return. It provides an understanding of how migration impacts the migrant subjects’ identities and values. Most importantly, it demonstrates how home and belonging are recreated in dual spaces, thus foregrounding transnationalism, aided by mobility technology, as a mediating factor that bridges the disjuncture between home and belonging.

As it has traditionally been practiced for centuries, classical meditation primarily strives to quiet the mind. If the constant whirling of thoughts can be slowed down, the theory goes, a welcome sense of relaxation and peace arises. The instruction in classical meditation offered here will provide you with techniques that, if practiced regularly, will help to settle the mind, allowing for ever deeper and lengthier meditative experiences. While many people use meditation as part of their spiritual or religious practice, the techniques of classical meditation are not necessarily spiritual or religious and there will be no emphasis on those aspects in these sessions. The objective is to get each meditator to the quietest possible state of mind: what you do with that mental stillness is up to you.

If you have begun a practice of meditation and are interested in further developing your meditation skills, and even if you are simply curious about meditation and maybe are looking for a way to get started, please attend an introductory session. No fee, no pressure, and no strings attached.

John Covach is Arthur Satz Professor of the Humanities and Director of the Institute for Popular Music on the River Campus, as well as Professor of Theory at the Eastman School of Music. His scholarly work has focused on both popular and classical music in the twentieth century, often exploring the relationship between music and spirituality. Professor Covach has trained in various forms of meditation instruction, including mindfulness (Koru), mantra meditation (Deepak Chopra), and kriya yoga. He has been initiated into several lineages of kriya yoga in North America and India (including those of Paramahansa Yogananda, Swami Hariharananda, and the Lahiri Mahasaya dynastic lineage). Professor Covach is an authorized yogacharya in the Panchanon Bhattacharya kriya lineage.

Harriet Zimmerman ’67E, ’75E (MM), began playing the piano at age three and earned both her bachelor's and master’s degrees in piano performance from Eastman, where she studied with Cécile Genhart and Maria Faini. For nearly 50 years, she taught in the ECMS piano department, sharing her experience, rigor, and love of music with generations of students. She was named a Jack L. Frank Instructor, and, in 1986, became the second faculty member to receive the Frank Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Zimmerman retired from teaching in May 2023.

As it has traditionally been practiced for centuries, classical meditation primarily strives to quiet the mind. If the constant whirling of thoughts can be slowed down, the theory goes, a welcome sense of relaxation and peace arises. The instruction in classical meditation offered here will provide you with techniques that, if practiced regularly, will help to settle the mind, allowing for ever deeper and lengthier meditative experiences. While many people use meditation as part of their spiritual or religious practice, the techniques of classical meditation are not necessarily spiritual or religious and there will be no emphasis on those aspects in these sessions. The objective is to get each meditator to the quietest possible state of mind: what you do with that mental stillness is up to you.

If you have begun a practice of meditation and are interested in further developing your meditation skills, and even if you are simply curious about meditation and maybe are looking for a way to get started, please attend an introductory session. No fee, no pressure, and no strings attached.

All University of Rochester-affiliated students, staff, and faculty are welcome.

Your Instructor

John Covach is Arthur Satz Professor of the Humanities and Director of the Institute for Popular Music on the River Campus, as well as Professor of Theory at the Eastman School of Music. His scholarly work has focused on both popular and classical music in the twentieth century, often exploring the relationship between music and spirituality. Professor Covach has trained in various forms of meditation instruction, including mindfulness (Koru), mantra meditation (Deepak Chopra), and kriya yoga. He has been initiated into several lineages of kriya yoga in North America and India (including those of Paramahansa Yogananda, Swami Hariharananda, and the Lahiri Mahasaya dynastic lineage). Professor Covach is an authorized yogacharya in the Panchanon Bhattacharya kriya lineage.

Saxology® was originally formed in 1980, when the saxophone and rhythm sections of the top Eastman Jazz Ensemble got together to play the published repertoire of the professional jazz group Supersax. With a dedication toward finding new and interesting ways for the saxophone section to play together, Saxology® has grown into an ensemble with its own unique identity and repertoire. Most all of the arrangements and compositions are written by Ramon Ricker and current or former members of the band. Its “book” now ranges from swing to free, with an ample portion of hard bop music in between.

Associate Professor, Applied Mathematics and Statistics and the MINDS and DSAI Institutes, Johns Hopkins University

Abstract: Many modern classification problems involve data that live in high-dimensional spaces but exhibit strong low-dimensional structure. Motivated by the manifold hypothesis, this talk presents a graph-based semi-supervised learning framework that explicitly exploits this geometric structure to improve generalization.

We model data as samples from an unknown low-dimensional manifold embedded in a high-dimensional ambient space. The manifold is first approximated in an unsupervised manner using a variational autoencoder, whose latent representations provide data-dependent coordinates. From these embeddings, we construct a geometric graph using Gaussian-weighted edges based on pairwise distances, turning the original classification problem into a semi-supervised node classification task on a graph, which we solve using a graph neural network.

The main contribution of this work is a theoretical analysis of the statistical generalization behavior of this data–manifold–graph pipeline. Under uniform sampling assumptions, we show that the generalization gap of the semi-supervised learning task decreases as the graph size grows, up to the optimization error of the GNN. We further show that a simple training strategy that periodically resamples slightly larger graphs during training leads to asymptotically vanishing generalization error.

We conclude with experimental results on image classification benchmarks, including MedMNIST, which support the theory and illustrate how leveraging learned geometric structure can improve both robustness and scalability in graph-based learning.

Bio: Luana Ruiz received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 2022, and the M.Eng. and B.Eng. double degree in electrical engineering from the École Supérieure d'Electricité and the University of São Paulo in 2017. She is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and the MINDS and DSAI Institutes at Johns Hopkins University, as well as the Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science departments (by courtesy). Luana's work focuses on large-scale graph information processing and graph neural network architectures. She was awarded an Eiffel Excellence scholarship from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs between 2013 and 2015; nominated an iREDEFINE fellow in 2019, a MIT EECS Rising Star in 2021, a Simons Research Fellow in 2022, and a METEOR fellow in 2023; and received best student paper awards at the 27th and 29th European Signal Processing Conferences.

Professor Maya Ravindranath Abtahian joined the Department of Linguistics in September 2015. She graduated with her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009. Her dissertation, Language Shift and the Speech Community: Sociolinguistic Change in a Garifuna Community in Belize, was advised by Gillian Sankoff (Chair), David Embick (Chair), and William Labov. Prior to coming to Rochester, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of New Hampshire. Prof. Abtahian works on language variation and change in the context of language shift and other social changes.

“Narcissister, A Truly Kinky Artist” reflects Dr. Barber’s newly published book Undesirability and Her Sisters: Black Women’s Visual Work and the Ethics of Representation. This book collates what Barber terms “undesirable” representations of Black female bodies in recent American sculpture, collage, photography, and dance-based performance art by Narcissister, and Kara Walker, Wangechi Mutu, Xaviera Simmons. These works not only engage the visual senses but also incorporate olfactory, haptic, and sonic experiences that challenge traditional interpretations of Blackness and womanhood in art history, Black Studies, feminist and gender studies, dance and performance studies, and queer studies. Instead of transcendental beauty, wholeness, and individual and collective becoming, the perverse Black female figures profiled here eschew sublimation and synthesis as necessary responses to racial and gender subjugation in the past, present, and future.

Dr. Barber will also be hosting a workshop “Thinking and Seeing Choreographically” on the following day, March 26, from 10am to noon at the Spurrier Den room 202. This workshop will approach movement not only as dance, but as a way of thinking, reading, writing, and making meaning across visual culture. Bridging art history, film, fashion, Black studies, feminism, and performance, this workshop will center choreography as both an artistic practice and an analytical method. Through close looking and embodied inquiry, participants will examine how bodies are staged and politicized and how the ethics of representation shape what—and who—we see.

Ayah Nuriddin is Assistant Professor in the History of Medicine at Yale University. She is a historian of medicine and biology with particular interests in the histories of eugenics, racial science, scientific racism, reproduction, and human subjects research. Prior to arriving at Yale, she was a Cotsen Postdoctoral Fellow in the Society of Fellows and Lecturer in the Council of the Humanities and African American Studies at Princeton University. She received her PhD in the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in 2021. She is currently working on her first book tentatively entitled “Seed and Soil: Black Eugenic Thought in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries.” It examines how African Americans navigated questions of racial science, eugenics, and hereditarianism in relation to struggles for racial justice in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her work has been published in the Historical Studies of Natural Science, Journal for the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences, the Lancet, Nursing Clio, and Somatosphere, and she has appeared on American History TV on C-Span.

Visible Parts: How to Watch Actors

How do we learn how to watch acting? This may seem like a naive question because many of us observe a lot of acting on big screens, small screens, and very small smart devices daily. Acting is probably the most widely enjoyed artform, and yet it is also the artform for which we have the least developed analytical vocabulary. It is almost as if there is an implicit belief that evaluating acting is so “natural” that viewers do not need to think about it, and/or that not noticing acting means that the acting is “natural” and, therefore, good. Naturally, I think there is a lot to unpack in those assumptions. I also believe that the many lacunae about how to gauge acting offer opportunities for a cultural reboot—an opening for new ways of viewing in the future.

Ayanna Thompson is an expert in Shakespearean studies specializing in Renaissance drama and race in performance.

Unofficially known as the “Othello whisperer,” Thompson is the director of the Arizona Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies and creator of the RaceB4Race symposium, an ongoing conference series and professional network community for scholars of color.

Thompson is a Regents Professor of English and director of the Arizona Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies. Thompson’s studies also include British literature, theatre, race and gender politics.

She is the author of several books, including "Shakespeare in the Theatre: Peter Sellars," "Teaching Shakespeare with Purpose: A Student-Centred Approach," "Passing Strange: Shakespeare, Race, and Contemporary America," and "Performing Race and Torture on the Early Modern Stage.”

In this class, master composition, shape, color, and what makes food art so enticing! We’ll take a trip to the gallery to look at the masters who have incorporated food in still lifes and sculptures, and then we’ll head into the studio, where we’ll set up appetizing still lifes with real food objects to create colorful and exciting artworks through observation.

Founded in 1941 by Emory Remington, professor of trombone for nearly fifty years at the Eastman School, the Eastman Trombone Choir is highly regarded around the world as one of the best ensembles of its kind. Remington established the concept of the present day Trombone Choir as a pedagogical extension of the private trombone class to include a musical ensemble experience. This concept has been imitated throughout most colleges and universities in the United States and abroad.

Who should take this course?
The American Heart Association’s BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

What does this course teach?
• High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
• BLS concepts from the Chain of Survival
• Delivering effective breaths or ventilations
• Importance of early use of and how to use an AED
• Performance as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
• Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults, children, and infants

Initial certification and recertification of healthcare providers
Upon successful completion of the course, students receive an AHA BLS Provider course completion card, valid for two years.

Cost: $80 for the course, plus $19 for the optional manual. Payment by cash, check, credit card, or 312 Requisition is accepted. Medical students at the University of Rochester have the course fee waived, but are responsible for the cost of the manual.

Note: If you're over 15 minutes late to the course, both entry and refunds will be denied. You will need to register and pay for a new course.

"Design a sustainable, community-based solution to help break cycles of poverty in Rochester, particularly among first-generation and low-income (FGLI) high school students. Identify key structural or social barriers and explain how your initiative addresses them. Your solution must be feasible within a $10,000 budget and designed for implementation in partnership with Project LTF."

Rochester is a city of incredible resilience, yet systemic hurdles continue to limit the next generation's potential. Project LTF has built a bridge through elite college application mentorship; now, we need your vision to strengthen and expand it.

Phase 1: The Pitch (Due March 19) To be considered for the finals, teams must submit a 1-page Executive Summary OR a 1-minute Video Pitch outlining their proposed solution by March 19th, at 5:00 pm. Finalists will be notified of their selection by 3/20

Phase 2: Walk-through (March 21) Finalists will be given a walk-through of the agenda, order of presentations, and extra information to help form their presentation and delivery.

Phase 3: The Finals (March 27) From the initial pool, five finalist teams will be selected to present their vision to a panel of judges and community stakeholders.

COMPLINE is sung by the Schola Cantorum on Sunday evenings (October through April) at 9:00 P.M. at Christ Church, 141 East Avenue. Repertoire includes Gregorian Chant, and motets by Byrd, Gibbons, Lassus, Monteverdi, Palestrina, Parsons, Sheppard, Tallis, Tavener, Pärt and other notable composers.

ORGAN PRELUDES are played by Eastman faculty and students preceding Compline on all but the first Sunday of the month.

CANDLELIGHT CONCERTS at Christ Church precede Compline on the first Sunday of the month, October-April. Concerts begin at 8:30pm, with Compline at 9:00pm. A reception follows Compline on these first Sundays.

Samira K. Mehta is an Associate Professor of Women and Gender Studies and Jewish Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she currently serves as the Director of Jewish Studies. Her research and teaching focus on the intersections of religion, culture, and gender, including the politics of family life and reproduction in the United States. Her first book, Beyond Chrismukkah: The Christian-Jewish Interfaith Family in the United States (University of North Carolina Press, 2018) was a National Jewish book award finalist. She has also published a book of personal essays called The Racism of People Who Love You(Beacon Press, 2023) and which appeared on Oprah’s “Books We Can’t Wait to Read in 2023,” where it was called “the epitome of a book meeting a moment.” God Bless the Pill: Sexuality and Contraception in American Religion examines the role of Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant voices in competing moral logics of contraception, population control, and eugenics from the mid-twentieth century to the 1990s and is due out in April, 2026. She is also beginning a project for Princeton University Press called A Mixed Multitude: Jews of Color in the United States. Mehta is the primary investigator for a Henry Luce Foundation funded project called Jews of Color: Histories and Futures. In the Spring of 2025, she will step into the role of series editor for the North American Religion series at NYU Press.

About the book: In God Bless the Pill, Samira K. Mehta traces the remarkable story of how mid-twentieth-century Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish voices promoted the use of birth control and made it more accessible for many Americans. They hoped birth control methods would curb divorce rates by encouraging sexually dynamic marriages and families unstrained by “too many” children—thereby creating a postwar upwardly mobile middle class. Religious leaders also promoted this understanding of the family as tied to Cold War capitalism and encouraged neither racial nor gender equity. But then came the backlash, both from the Right—which failed to anticipate the feminist potential of contraception—and from the Left, where women, particularly women of color, sought to ensure that birth control was a tool of liberation rather than one rooted in patriarchal and racial oppression. Ultimately, Mehta offers compelling new insights into the way religion accommodates itself to social, technological, and medical change.

Nancy Yousef is Professor of English at Yale. A specialist in British and European Romanticism, with interests ranging from the eighteenth century to early modernism, Yousef’s scholarship is primarily concerned with intersections and divergences between literature and philosophy. She is the author of Isolated Cases: The Anxieties of Autonomy from Enlightenment to Romanticism (Cornell University Press, 2004), Romantic Intimacy (Stanford University Press, 2013) (winner of the Barricelli Book Prize), and The Aesthetic Commonplace: Wordsworth, Eliot, Wittgenstein and the Language of Every Day (Oxford University Press, 2022).

Visiting Assistant Professor of German

PhD, Princeton University

Lisa Cerami received her BA in German, English and Women's Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and MA and PhD in German from Princeton University. Her dissertation explored the concomitant rise of mysticism, and critical poetics in German modernism around the turn of the 20th century, which grew into another research project examining medievalism as an aesthetic and political phenomenon in the 19th and 20th centuries. Dr. Cerami directed the German program at Nazareth College until 2017 while also serving on the steering committee for the Women and Gender Studies major. She has taught courses on Medieval literature and culture, Jewish-German cultural history, 18th-21st century German literature, critical theory, feminist theory, and other topics. Dr. Cerami has most recently been engaged with various translation projects, including Tim Seitz's book Design Thinking And the New Spirit of Capitalism which will be published by Palgrave in 2020.

John Ellis, saxophone

John Ellis is one of New York’s premiere tenor saxophone voices. With more than 150 album credits as a sideman, John has recorded with a wide variety of artists such as Charlie Hunter, Robert Glasper, Darcy James Argue, Helen Sung, Kendrick Scott Oracle, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Sting. John was the 2nd place winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition in 2002, he was the recipient of three composition grants through The Jazz Gallery for the creation of new work (“Dreamscapes”, “The Ice Siren”, and “MOBRO”) and he was selected as the 2014 Make Jazz Fellow by the 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica. John has released fourteen albums as a leader, three of those featuring his New Orleans-centered band Double-Wide, which has toured extensively and was featured on the Main Stage of the 2012 Newport Jazz Festival. He co-produced the music for the children’s book series “Baby Loves Jazz” with Aaron Goldberg, and he wrote the theme music for the NPR podcast, “Rough Translation.” His latest album, “Bizet: Carmen in Jazz”, was released on Blue Room Music in December of 2023 and features Reuben Rogers, Gary Versace, and Jason Marsalis.

This ad hoc ensemble presents a variety of repertoire once per semester by composers and band leaders such as the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band, Miles Davis Birth of the Cool, Marty Paich/Art Pepper + Eleven, Boyd Reaburn/George Handy, Gil Evans etc. The ensemble is led by various faculty members and is by assignment.

HIV. Ebola. COVID-19—Three very different viruses with different trajectories and even more divergent outcomes. What links these epidemics together, however, is the recurrent theme of blame directed towards entire ethnoracial groups as an etiological explanation for deadly diseases and their spread. This presentation explores racialized blame in times of epidemic uncertainty, and interrogates the role of public health institutions in perpetuating this age-old phenomenon.

Elizabeth Adetiba (she/her) is an early career researcher and assistant professor in the Department of Black Studies at the University of Rochester. Dr. Adetiba earned her PhD in Sociology from Columbia University, where she specialized in historical sociology, science, knowledge, and technology, and medical sociology. Her research career extends from the U.S., to South Africa, to New Zealand, where she was a 2018 U.S. Fulbright Fellow. Her work has also been supported by National Science Foundation. Above all, Dr. Adetiba is a critical writer, having worked as a journalist and fact-checker prior to pursuing her doctoral studies. Her writing has been featured in HuffPost, Slate, The Nation, Salon, SB Nation, and The Black Youth Project, and you can find her most recent public articles here. Dr. Adetiba’s work investigates how historical constructions of Blackness—and more so anti-Blackness— shape scientific thinking across a range of social domains, from medical and epidemiological scholarship, to athletics, to intergovernmental organizations. Her current book project explores the presence of anti-Black sentiment in the medical scholarship concerning the origins of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and its widespread impact on global AIDS policy.

Professor Mark Aldenderfer is Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology and Heritage Studies at the University of California, Merced; he is also Adjunct Professor with the School of Anthropology at the University of Arizona, Tucson His research focuses the comparative analysis of high altitude cultural and biological adaptations from an archaeological perspective, and he is likely to be the only archaeologist who has done research on the three high elevation plateaus of the planet—Ethiopian, Andean, and Tibetan—over the course of his career. He currently works in the High Himalayas of Nepal studying population movements and the archaeology of religion in pre-Buddhist and Buddhist eras. He holds his degrees from Wake Forest University (BA) and the Pennsylvania State University (MA and Ph.D.). He has conducted fieldwork in Tibet, Nepal, Peru, Argentina, Belize, Guatemala and Ethiopia, as well as many regions of the United States.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Desire and Abundance features a selection from MAG’s collection of American still lifes, spanning from the 1800s to the present. Taken together, these artworks present an array of items that underscore shifting tastes in American art, commerce, and daily life.
