Biologically Informed Crisis Planning for Suicide Prevention by Annamarie Bailey, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Rochester Medicine. Bio: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/people/112362845-annamarie-bailey Presentation Description: Safety planning is considered a best practice brief intervention for coping with suicidal crises, yet their effectiveness varies, particularly among youth with significant mental health concerns. Actively incorporating biopsychosocial models offers the opportunity to address current limitations in safety planning by improving the capacity to adapt in the face of stress and respond more effectively during suicidal crises. This presentation outlines emerging research on a biopsychosocial approach to safety planning for suicide prevention, with the long-term goal of improving best practices in safety planning

Look Who’s Talking: Visuospatial attentional influences on multi-talker speech recognition in autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by Emily J. Knight, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Neuroscience, University of Rochester Medicine. Bio: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/people/112363291-emily-knight. Presentation Description: Many children with developmental disabilities struggle to understand speech in noisy environments, impacting learning and social participation. We present evidence suggesting that disrupted selective attention and audiovisual integration constrain speech-in-noise perception in school-age children with ADHD and autism. Motivated by these findings, we then describe the preliminary design of a virtual reality training game to support regulation of audiovisual attention, balancing mechanistic fidelity with child engagement.

Advances in Translational Brain Mapping at URMC by Frank E. Garcea, PhD, Research Assistant Professor, University of Rochester Medicine. Bio: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/people/112363352-frank-e-garcea. Presentation Description: In this talk I will discuss how awake brain mapping is used to test how language is organized in the brain. I will then discuss how we use machine learning with pre-operative functional MRI data to predict post-operative cognitive outcomes. Taken together, these studies demonstrate how working with patients before and after surgery can reveal basic principles of brain organization while testing hypotheses about how patients recover after brain surgery.

Abstract: Efforts in the Lipshultz Group are largely geared towards developing versatile platforms for synthetic transformations, leveraging radical reaction pathways driven by light. Among these platforms are (i) titanium ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) photocatalysis, (ii) Vit B6-inspired Photo-Decarboxylase catalysis, and (iii) Vit B6-dependent aminomutase-inspired amino acid homologation. Each of these reaction classes leverages unique photochemical and/or radical key steps which provide opportunity for manipulation and control through fundamental understanding. First, electronic tuning of photoactive titanium catalysts allows for rational manipulation of photochemistry, manifesting in controlled photocatalysis for C–C and C–H bond functionalization.

Tuning of the redox properties can further enable reversible C–C bond activation for formal alcohol metathesis. Second, taking inspiration from Dunathan's stereoelectronic hypothesis for Vit B6-dependent enzymatic reactivity, Photo-Decarboxylase catalysis is realized through catalyst-templated hyperconjugative charge-transfer, delivering access to decarboxylated diradical species which engage in regiospecific bond construction. Finally, α-to-β amino acid homologative transmutation can be achieved through a highly polarized biomimetic 3-exo-trig radical cascade. Fundamental mechanistic studies, combined with density functional theory calculations, deliver deeper understanding of these key steps and provide prospects for further development.

Anne Muntges will talk about her work on 9/15, at 3pm, in Sage Art Center (sculpture space). A reception is to follow from 4-6pm in the gallery. This event is open to all students, faculty, staff, and the greater Rochester community.

Describing their work, the artists say,

Anne Muntges:

Through drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we inhabit, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city and the intimate, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice examines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and our total reliance on the structures, spaces, and strangers around us. Using technical pens and other drawing tools, I translate these transient moments into life-sized environments, turning flat drawings into walkable architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of shared time.

This slow, obsessive drafting process functions as a continuous, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive, overwhelming emotional and environmental weight; for me, the only way to survive it is to build a beautiful, meticulous cage around it with thousands of tiny ink lines. Whether I am documenting the overlooked systems of public maintenance or sorting through the fractured pieces of my own everyday coping mechanisms, I treat the page as a psychological ledger. This fiercely disciplined method gives a profound sense of permanence to the fleeting markers of our surroundings, proving that tracking the invisible upkeep of a city is deeply tied to the daily preservation required to keep a human life in motion.

This investigation moves fluidly between the microscopic and the monumental, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling up to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy, wallpapered paper. By constantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance directly into the surfaces of these objects, I create a crazy, immersive world that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately, this grounded, deeply human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance, creating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay radical, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.

Mizin Shin:

Blended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the industrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The work maps an expansive index of consumption, tracing corn as both a central ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial manufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines, fragments of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern capital and production. While Blended Complexities is depicted as a mapping of connectivity through corn, it acts as a broader critique of system relationality and how diverse material items (and the economies surrounding them) are fundamentally linked.

More about the artists:

Anne Muntges (b. 1982) earned her BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2005 and her MFA in Printmaking from the University at Buffalo in 2008. Based in Brooklyn, she focuses on highly detailed drawings, prints, and installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo. Most recently, her work is featured in Monumental Drawing at the More Museum in Gorssel, NL. Muntges’ art is held in collections such as the California College of the Arts, the Library of Congress, the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Among her numerous accolades, she was awarded the NYFA/NYSCA Fellowship in 2014, Sustainable Arts Finalist in 2021, and Interlude Grantee. Since 2010, she has participated in prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BRIC, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Monira Foundation Artist Residency.

Born and raised in South Korea, Mizin Shin is a US-based visual artist. Regularly leading printmaking workshops with collaborating art organizations, Shin focuses on both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the medium. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions across the United States, Belgium, Spain, the UK, India, and South Korea. She was a juror for The Paths We Cross: Perspectives from the Korean Diaspora, 2022 Screenprint Biennial, and 2021 Southern Tier Biennial. Shin is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; the University of Rochester Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship; the Andrew & Barbara Choi Foundation Project Grant; and Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.Mizin Shin graduated from Hong-ik University with a B.F.A in Printmaking and received her M.F.A from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester as well as a co-founder of Mirabo Press in Buffalo, NY. She has served as a board member of the Mid-America Print Council and vice president of the Print Club of Rochester from 2020–22, and a board member of Visual Studies Workshop from 2023-25. Recently, Shin has published TeachPrint.com—a free resource of hypermedia educational materials for school teachers to promote printmaking in art classrooms.

Anne Muntges (b. 1982) earned her BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2005 and her MFA in Printmaking from the University at Buffalo in 2008. Based in Brooklyn, she focuses on highly detailed drawings, prints, and installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo. Most recently, her work is featured in Monumental Drawing at the More Museum in Gorssel, NL. Muntges’ art is held in collections such as the California College of the Arts, the Library of Congress, the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Among her numerous accolades, she was awarded the NYFA/NYSCA Fellowship in 2014, Sustainable Arts Finalist in 2021, and Interlude Grantee. Since 2010, she has participated in prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BRIC, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Monira Foundation Artist Residency.

Born and raised in South Korea, Mizin Shin is a US-based visual artist. Regularly leading printmaking workshops with collaborating art organizations, Shin focuses on both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the medium. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions across the United States, Belgium, Spain, the UK, India, and South Korea. She was a juror for The Paths We Cross: Perspectives from the Korean Diaspora, 2022 Screenprint Biennial, and 2021 Southern Tier Biennial. Shin is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; the University of Rochester Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship; the Andrew & Barbara Choi Foundation Project Grant; and Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.

Mizin Shin graduated from Hong-ik University with a B.F.A in Printmaking and received her M.F.A from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester as well as a co-founder of Mirabo Press in Buffalo, NY. Anne Muntges:

Through drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we inhabit, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city and the intimate, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice examines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and our total reliance on the structures, spaces, and strangers around us. Using technical pens and other drawing tools, I translate these transient moments into life-sized environments, turning flat drawings into walkable architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of shared time.

This slow, obsessive drafting process functions as a continuous, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive, overwhelming emotional and environmental weight; for me, the only way to survive it is to build a beautiful, meticulous cage around it with thousands of tiny ink lines. Whether I am documenting the overlooked systems of public maintenance or sorting through the fractured pieces of my own everyday coping mechanisms, I treat the page as a psychological ledger. This fiercely disciplined method gives a profound sense of permanence to the fleeting markers of our surroundings, proving that tracking the invisible upkeep of a city is deeply tied to the daily preservation required to keep a human life in motion.

This investigation moves fluidly between the microscopic and the monumental, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling up to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy, wallpapered paper. By constantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance directly into the surfaces of these objects, I create a crazy, immersive world that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately, this grounded, deeply human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance, creating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay radical, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.

Blended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the industrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The work maps an expansive index of consumption, tracing corn as both a central ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial manufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines, fragments of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern capital and production. President Mangelsdorf is an experienced academic executive known for her leadership in improving academic quality, advancing research, and expanding educational access and inclusion at some of the nation’s leading public and private institutions. Since her appointment as president in 2019, she has increased the University’s investment and growth in research and clinical enterprises, overseen record annual fundraising, including the 2025 public launch of the most ambitious fundraising and engagement initiative in the institution’s history, and created new leadership positions to better engage with the Greater Rochester community.

A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, President Mangelsdorf holds the title of G. Robert Witmer, Jr. University Professor with an appointment in the Department of Psychology. She received her bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and earned her doctorate in child psychology from the University of Minnesota. Before joining Rochester, she served as provost at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Mehmet Karabela is a scholar of Islamic intellectual history. He is the author of Islamic Thought Through Protestant Eyes and Mustafa Sabri Efendi. Dr. Karabela’s recent book, Islamic Thought Through Protestant Eyes, examines the engagement of post-Reformation Protestant scholars with Islamic philosophy, theology and the Sunni-Shi’a schism. He draws on previously unstudied dissertations and disputations by primarily Lutheran scholars to broaden the conventional interpretation of the Reformation beyond a solely European Christian phenomenon and to open up new directions for future research. His book, Mustafa Sabri Efendi, is a study of the life and writings of Mustafa Sabri Efendi (d.1954), the chief jurist of the Ottoman Empire, and was published in Indonesia, the most populous Muslim country​.

Before coming to the University of Rochester, Karabela taught at Queen’s University in Canada. He has taught courses on Islam in the modern world, religion and democracy, political theology, religion and politics in Muslim societies as well as advanced seminars such as the European perception of Jews and Muslims during the Enlightenment and multiculturalism in the Ottoman Empire.

In collaboration with global partners, Karabela has produced artistic works inspired by historical events and religious concepts. As the director of the Canadian Institute for Multicultural Diplomacy, he oversees multiple projects on artistic expression from diverse cultures and religious traditions. He also leads a multimedia project about the spiritual journeys of a Christian monk and a Muslim dervish as well as a documentary on the Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen.

Trisha Paul is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Divisions of Hematology and Oncology and Palliative Care, and the Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics at the University of Rochester. She holds an MFA in creative writing from NYU and completed subspecialty training at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. As a researcher, she studies writing and storytelling interventions for children with cancer, their families, and their care teams. She is a Field Notes Editor for Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine, and her writing has appeared in medical journals such as JAMA and anthologies such as Where It Hurts: Dispatches from the Emotional Frontlines of Medicine.

Who should take this course?
The American Heart Association’s BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

What does this course teach?
• High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
• BLS concepts from the Chain of Survival
• Delivering effective breaths or ventilations
• Importance of early use of and how to use an AED
• Performance as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
• Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults, children, and infants

Initial certification and recertification of healthcare providers
Upon successful completion of the course, students receive an AHA BLS Provider course completion card, valid for two years.

Cost: $80 for the course, plus $19 for the optional manual. Payment by cash, check, credit card, or 312 Requisition is accepted. Medical students at the University of Rochester have the course fee waived, but are responsible for the cost of the manual.

Describing their work, the artists say,

Anne Muntges:

Through drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we inhabit, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city and the intimate, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice examines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and our total reliance on the structures, spaces, and strangers around us. Using technical pens and other drawing tools, I translate these transient moments into life-sized environments, turning flat drawings into walkable architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of shared time.

This slow, obsessive drafting process functions as a continuous, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive, overwhelming emotional and environmental weight; for me, the only way to survive it is to build a beautiful, meticulous cage around it with thousands of tiny ink lines. Whether I am documenting the overlooked systems of public maintenance or sorting through the fractured pieces of my own everyday coping mechanisms, I treat the page as a psychological ledger. This fiercely disciplined method gives a profound sense of permanence to the fleeting markers of our surroundings, proving that tracking the invisible upkeep of a city is deeply tied to the daily preservation required to keep a human life in motion.

This investigation moves fluidly between the microscopic and the monumental, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling up to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy, wallpapered paper. By constantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance directly into the surfaces of these objects, I create a crazy, immersive world that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately, this grounded, deeply human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance, creating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay radical, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.

Mizin Shin:

Blended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the industrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The work maps an expansive index of consumption, tracing corn as both a central ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial manufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines, fragments of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern capital and production. While Blended Complexities is depicted as a mapping of connectivity through corn, it acts as a broader critique of system relationality and how diverse material items (and the economies surrounding them) are fundamentally linked.

Anne Muntges (b. 1982) earned her BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2005 and her MFA in Printmaking from the University at Buffalo in 2008. Based in Brooklyn, she focuses on highly detailed drawings, prints, and installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo. Most recently, her work is featured in Monumental Drawing at the More Museum in Gorssel, NL. Muntges’ art is held in collections such as the California College of the Arts, the Library of Congress, the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Among her numerous accolades, she was awarded the NYFA/NYSCA Fellowship in 2014, Sustainable Arts Finalist in 2021, and Interlude Grantee. Since 2010, she has participated in prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BRIC, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Monira Foundation Artist Residency.

Born and raised in South Korea, Mizin Shin is a US-based visual artist. Regularly leading printmaking workshops with collaborating art organizations, Shin focuses on both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the medium. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions across the United States, Belgium, Spain, the UK, India, and South Korea. She was a juror for The Paths We Cross: Perspectives from the Korean Diaspora, 2022 Screenprint Biennial, and 2021 Southern Tier Biennial. Shin is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; the University of Rochester Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship; the Andrew & Barbara Choi Foundation Project Grant; and Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.Mizin Shin graduated from Hong-ik University with a B.F.A in Printmaking and received her M.F.A from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester as well as a co-founder of Mirabo Press in Buffalo, NY. She has served as a board member of the Mid-America Print Council and vice president of the Print Club of Rochester from 2020–22, and a board member of Visual Studies Workshop from 2023-25. Recently, Shin has published TeachPrint.com—a free resource of hypermedia educational materials for school teachers to promote printmaking in art classrooms.

Abstract:

Over the past several decades, computer vision has witnessed remarkable progress across a broad range of tasks. Recently, the field has entered a new era with the emergence of large-scale Vision Foundation Models (VFMs). By learning general-purpose visual representations from massive data, VFMs offer new opportunities to address several long-standing challenges in computer vision, including generalization, open-vocabulary understanding, and the development of unified models. In this talk, we will explore the evolving role of VFMs in vision, spanning several paradigms: leveraging frozen VFMs, adapting VFMs, developing domain-specific VFMs, and, ultimately, using VFMs as agents. Together, these approaches point toward a broader shift in how we build, adapt, and deploy computer vision systems.

Bio:

Dr. Xiaoming Liu is Jacqueline Maria Hagan Distinguished Professor at the Department of Computer Science of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was MSU Foundation Professor, and Anil and Nandita Jain Endowed Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Michigan State University (MSU). He received Ph.D. degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 2004. Before joining MSU in 2012 he was a research scientist at General Electric (GE) Global Research. He works on computer vision, machine learning, and biometrics especially on face related analysis and 3D vision. He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. He has authored more than 200 scientific publications, and has filed 35 U.S. patents. His work has been cited over 35000 times according to Google Scholar, with an H-index of 90. He is a fellow of IEEE and IAPR. Title: Finitely dependent processes on Z^d subshifts.

Abstract: Finitely dependent processes are a generalisation of independent processes which require only that restrictions of the process to sufficiently separated subsets of Z^d are independent. Schramm, Holroyd and Wilson showed that there are no stationary finitely dependent processes on proper 3-colorings of Z^d for d>1. But Holroyd and Liggett proved that there are stationary finitely dependent processes on proper 4-colorings of Z^d for any d. Proper q-colorings of Z^d are examples of
so-called subshifts. We will discuss some results addressing the following question: When do subshifts support finitely dependent processes? We will see how cocycles (a.k.a. height functions) on subshifts can be used to answer this question in certain classes of subshifts, including tiling spaces by a collection of rectangles in plane.

Born and raised in South Korea, Mizin Shin is a US-based visual artist. Regularly leading printmaking workshops with collaborating art organizations, Shin focuses on both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the medium. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions across the United States, Belgium, Spain, the UK, India, and South Korea. She was a juror for The Paths We Cross: Perspectives from the Korean Diaspora, 2022 Screenprint Biennial, and 2021 Southern Tier Biennial. Shin is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; the University of Rochester Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship; the Andrew & Barbara Choi Foundation Project Grant; and Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.Mizin Shin graduated from Hong-ik University with a B.F.A in Printmaking and received her M.F.A from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester as well as a co-founder of Mirabo Press in Buffalo, NY. She has served as a board member of the Mid-America Print Council and vice president of the Print Club of Rochester from 2020–22, and a board member of Visual Studies Workshop from 2023-25. Recently, Shin has published TeachPrint.com—a free resource of hypermedia educational materials for school teachers to promote printmaking in art classrooms.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Desire and Abundance features a selection from MAG’s collection of American still lifes, spanning from the 1800s to the present. Taken together, these artworks present an array of items that underscore shifting tastes in American art, commerce, and daily life.

Collaborating on the title piece, are choreographer Anne Wilcox and writer/composer Adam Wilcox, along with beautiful professional dancers Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp, Michelle Iklé, Kaidence Pacheco, Doreen Prempeh, and Elyssia Primus. Historians Robert Riley, Dr. Laurence Guttmacher and Dr. Ryan Thibodeau will share a brief history of the dedication site and of Rochester’s role in mental health care. Nanako Horikawa Mandrino will perform her elegant movement solo, The Flower of Remembering, drawing from the rich symbolism of the red poppy which Japanese culture associates with life’s transience. Analog, a sound based practice by multi-instrumentalist, adaptive teaching artist, and performer, Sean Mulligan, will provide improvisational accompaniment and sound bath ambience. Joining Sean is the gifted musician and sound artist Greg Woodsbie, who is known for his genre-bending performances, blending jazz, classical, and Cuban influences across piano, accordion, and percussion. A brass quintet of Eastman School of Music students, led by French hornist, Kasey Gibbons, will also contribute to the musical offerings. Invisible No More concludes with a public movement choir allowing all participants to join in the final portion of the dedication.

In 2022 Wilcox directed the wildly successful dance/theater production When the Souls Rise (WTSR) in Mount Hope Cemetery with a cast of 17 and composer/performer Ward Hartenstein, as the Specter of Euphony. Over one thousand viewers attended the performances of WTSR. Her love of Mount Hope is evident in Invisible No More, as well. Wilcox hopes this event will speak to the dignity of all human beings and the importance remembering our past. This project is funded by a Humanities Grant from the University of Rochester, and support from the Friends of Mount Hope and the ESL Rochester Fringe.

This year’s symposium emphasizes “Healing Communities,” including creating spaces for healing, strengthening relationships between communities, celebrating collective resilience, building systems of support, and fostering a culture of healing within institutions.

Proposals may feature works in progress or published research addressing health equity and health disparities. Community-partnered research, multidisciplinary teams, cross-institutional collaborations, and co-presentations with community or organizational partners are especially encouraged. Relevant areas include quality improvement, clinical care delivery, medical education, workforce development, population health, and health equity research methods.

Presentation formats include 10-minute oral presentations with Q&A, posters displayed in person and in a virtual ePoster gallery, and interactive workshops. Awards will include Best Oral Presentation, Best Poster Presentation, Best Healing communities project, and Outstanding Community Investigator or Partner.

Anne Muntges:

Through drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we inhabit, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city and the intimate, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice examines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and our total reliance on the structures, spaces, and strangers around us. Using technical pens and other drawing tools, I translate these transient moments into life-sized environments, turning flat drawings into walkable architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of shared time.

This slow, obsessive drafting process functions as a continuous, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive, overwhelming emotional and environmental weight; for me, the only way to survive it is to build a beautiful, meticulous cage around it with thousands of tiny ink lines. Whether I am documenting the overlooked systems of public maintenance or sorting through the fractured pieces of my own everyday coping mechanisms, I treat the page as a psychological ledger. This fiercely disciplined method gives a profound sense of permanence to the fleeting markers of our surroundings, proving that tracking the invisible upkeep of a city is deeply tied to the daily preservation required to keep a human life in motion.

This investigation moves fluidly between the microscopic and the monumental, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling up to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy, wallpapered paper. By constantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance directly into the surfaces of these objects, I create a crazy, immersive world that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately, this grounded, deeply human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance, creating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay radical, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.

Mizin Shin:

Blended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the industrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The work maps an expansive index of consumption, tracing corn as both a central ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial manufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines, fragments of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern capital and production. While Blended Complexities is depicted as a mapping of connectivity through corn, it acts as a broader critique of system relationality and how diverse material items (and the economies surrounding them) are fundamentally linked.

Muntges’ art is held in collections such as the California College of the Arts, the Library of Congress, the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Among her numerous accolades, she was awarded the NYFA/NYSCA Fellowship in 2014, Sustainable Arts Finalist in 2021, and Interlude Grantee. Since 2010, she has participated in prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BRIC, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Monira Foundation Artist Residency.

Using technical pens and other drawing tools, I translate these transient moments into life-sized environments, turning flat drawings into walkable architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of shared time.

This slow, obsessive drafting process functions as a continuous, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive, overwhelming emotional and environmental weight; for me, the only way to survive it is to build a beautiful, meticulous cage around it with thousands of tiny ink lines. This investigation moves fluidly between the microscopic and the monumental, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling up to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy, wallpapered paper. By constantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance directly into the surfaces of these objects, I create a crazy, immersive world that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately, this grounded, deeply human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance, creating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay radical, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.

Mizin Shin:

Blended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the industrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The work maps an expansive index of consumption, tracing corn as both a central ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial manufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines, fragments of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern capital and production. While Blended Complexities is depicted as a mapping of connectivity through corn, it acts as a broader critique of system relationality and how diverse material items (and the economies surrounding them) are fundamentally linked.

Anne Muntges (b. 1982) earned her BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2005 and her MFA in Printmaking from the University at Buffalo in 2008. Based in Brooklyn, she focuses on highly detailed drawings, prints, and installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo. Most recently, her work is featured in Monumental Drawing at the More Museum in Gorssel, NL. Muntges’ art is held in collections such as the California College of the Arts, the Library of Congress, the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Among her numerous accolades, she was awarded the NYFA/NYSCA Fellowship in 2014, Sustainable Arts Finalist in 2021, and Interlude Grantee. Since 2010, she has participated in prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BRIC, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Monira Foundation Artist Residency.

Born and raised in South Korea, Mizin Shin is a US-based visual artist. Regularly leading printmaking workshops with collaborating art organizations, Shin focuses on both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the medium. She was a juror for The Paths We Cross: Perspectives from the Korean Diaspora, 2022 Screenprint Biennial, and 2021 Southern Tier Biennial. Shin is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; the University of Rochester Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship; the Andrew & Barbara Choi Foundation Project Grant; and Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.Mizin Shin graduated from Hong-ik University with a B.F.A in Printmaking and received her M.F.A from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester as well as a co-founder of Mirabo Press in Buffalo, NY. The American Heart Association’s BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

What does this course teach?
• High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
• BLS concepts from the Chain of Survival
• Delivering effective breaths or ventilations
• Importance of early use of and how to use an AED
• Performance as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
• Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults, children, and infants

Initial certification and recertification of healthcare providers
Upon successful completion of the course, students receive an AHA BLS Provider course completion card, valid for two years.

Cost: $80 for the course, plus $19 for the optional manual. Payment by cash, check, credit card, or 312 Requisition is accepted. Medical students at the University of Rochester have the course fee waived, but are responsible for the cost of the manual.

Anne Muntges:

Through drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we inhabit, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city and the intimate, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice examines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and our total reliance on the structures, spaces, and strangers around us. Abstract: Terahertz (THz) vibrational spectroscopy, occurring at frequencies of 0.1 – 10 THz or 3 – 330 cm-1, provides direct access to low-frequency phonons that govern collective molecular motions in crystalline materials. Unlike traditional mid-IR methods (i.e, FTIR) that most often probe intramolecular motions, terahertz lattice dynamics encode information about intermolecular forces that can provide insight into various properties ranging from crystal packing, mechanical response, and structural changes. These vibrations are highly-excited at ambient conditions, and therefore they are responsible for a host of dynamic properties such as thermal expansion and solid-state reactivity.

By combining experimental terahertz time-domain and low-frequency Raman spectroscopy with solid-state density functional theory, it is possible to not only assign complex terahertz spectra with confidence, but also to connect individual phonon modes to specific stimuli-responsive phenomena. This work highlights how these capabilities can be used to understand, and ultimately control, the behavior of molecular solids. collective phonons not only report on reactivity but may actively influence reaction pathways, providing new opportunities to predict, understand, and eventually manipulate chemistry in the solid state.

Wessels is a poet and critic. He is the author of Who Follow the Gleam (University of Massachusetts Press), winner of the 2025 Juniper Prize in Poetry. His poetry has appeared in The Kenyon Review, The Yale Review, and Conjunctions, among other such journals; his scholarship and criticism has appeared in Literary Imagination, Middle Eastern Literatures, and Los Angeles Review of Books. He has received fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the Stadler Center for Poetry. He is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Poetry at the University of Rochester, from which he received his PhD in English. He splits his time between Rochester and the Black Forest, Germany.

Anne Muntges will talk about her work on 9/15, at 3pm, in Sage Art Center (sculpture space). A reception is to follow from 4-6pm in the gallery. This event is open to all students, faculty, staff, and the greater Rochester community.

Describing their work, the artists say,

Anne Muntges:

Through drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we inhabit, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city and the intimate, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice examines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and our total reliance on the structures, spaces, and strangers around us. Using technical pens and other drawing tools, I translate these transient moments into life-sized environments, turning flat drawings into walkable architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of shared time.

This slow, obsessive drafting process functions as a continuous, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive, overwhelming emotional and environmental weight; for me, the only way to survive it is to build a beautiful, meticulous cage around it with thousands of tiny ink lines. Whether I am documenting the overlooked systems of public maintenance or sorting through the fractured pieces of my own everyday coping mechanisms, I treat the page as a psychological ledger. This fiercely disciplined method gives a profound sense of permanence to the fleeting markers of our surroundings, proving that tracking the invisible upkeep of a city is deeply tied to the daily preservation required to keep a human life in motion.

This investigation moves fluidly between the microscopic and the monumental, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling up to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy, wallpapered paper. By constantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance directly into the surfaces of these objects, I create a crazy, immersive world that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately, this grounded, deeply human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance, creating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay radical, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.

Mizin Shin:

Blended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the industrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The work maps an expansive index of consumption, tracing corn as both a central ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial manufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines, fragments of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern capital and production. While Blended Complexities is depicted as a mapping of connectivity through corn, it acts as a broader critique of system relationality and how diverse material items (and the economies surrounding them) are fundamentally linked.

More about the artists:

Anne Muntges (b. 1982) earned her BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2005 and her MFA in Printmaking from the University at Buffalo in 2008. Based in Brooklyn, she focuses on highly detailed drawings, prints, and installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo. Most recently, her work is featured in Monumental Drawing at the More Museum in Gorssel, NL. Muntges’ art is held in collections such as the California College of the Arts, the Library of Congress, the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Among her numerous accolades, she was awarded the NYFA/NYSCA Fellowship in 2014, Sustainable Arts Finalist in 2021, and Interlude Grantee. Since 2010, she has participated in prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BRIC, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Monira Foundation Artist Residency.

Born and raised in South Korea, Mizin Shin is a US-based visual artist. Regularly leading printmaking workshops with collaborating art organizations, Shin focuses on both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the medium. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions across the United States, Belgium, Spain, the UK, India, and South Korea. She was a juror for The Paths We Cross: Perspectives from the Korean Diaspora, 2022 Screenprint Biennial, and 2021 Southern Tier Biennial. Shin is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; the University of Rochester Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship; the Andrew & Barbara Choi Foundation Project Grant; and Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.Mizin Shin graduated from Hong-ik University with a B.F.A in Printmaking and received her M.F.A from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester as well as a co-founder of Mirabo Press in Buffalo, NY. She has served as a board member of the Mid-America Print Council and vice president of the Print Club of Rochester from 2020–22, and a board member of Visual Studies Workshop from 2023-25. Recently, Shin has published TeachPrint.com—a free resource of hypermedia educational materials for school teachers to promote printmaking in art classrooms.

Join myHub for a Career Story with Eric Schott, Ph.D., a University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry alumnus and Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of sōlaria biō, a biotechnology company founded in 2017 in the Boston/Cambridge biotech ecosystem.

In his talk, “Biotech Unfiltered: Startups, Science & Entrepreneurship,” Dr. Schott will share his journey from graduate researcher to biotech entrepreneur and executive and provide an inside look at what it takes to launch, build, and grow a small biotechnology company.

Drawing on his experience helping lead sōlaria biō, Dr. Schott will explore the company's journey through three very different periods in the lifecycle of a biotechnology company: Launch and Discovery, Development, and Commercialization. He will discuss how changes in funding, hiring, scientific priorities, workplace culture, and the broader biotech landscape can influence both emerging companies and the careers of the scientists working within them.

Trainees will also learn about the realities of working in a small biotech company, where scientists and leaders often wear multiple hats and contribute beyond their original scientific training. Dr. Schott will discuss entrepreneurship, company growth, navigating the Boston biotech community, transitioning from academia to industry, and much more!

Benjamín Castañeda is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering, a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and a Professor of Imaging Sciences at University of Rochester. His research focuses on the development of point-of-care medical devices for limited-resource settings.

Sean Crowell is an Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at University of Rochester. His research interests include remote sensing, atmospheric transport modeling, anthropogenic carbon emissions, and the terrestrial carbon cycle.

Anne Muntges:

Through drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we inhabit, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city and the intimate, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice examines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and our total reliance on the structures, spaces, and strangers around us. Using technical pens and other drawing tools, I translate these transient moments into life-sized environments, turning flat drawings into walkable architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of shared time.

This slow, obsessive drafting process functions as a continuous, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive, overwhelming emotional and environmental weight; for me, the only way to survive it is to build a beautiful, meticulous cage around it with thousands of tiny ink lines. Whether I am documenting the overlooked systems of public maintenance or sorting through the fractured pieces of my own everyday coping mechanisms, I treat the page as a psychological ledger. This fiercely disciplined method gives a profound sense of permanence to the fleeting markers of our surroundings, proving that tracking the invisible upkeep of a city is deeply tied to the daily preservation required to keep a human life in motion.

This investigation moves fluidly between the microscopic and the monumental, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling up to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy, wallpapered paper. By constantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance directly into the surfaces of these objects, I create a crazy, immersive world that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately, this grounded, deeply human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance, creating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay radical, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.

Blended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the industrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The work maps an expansive index of consumption, tracing corn as both a central ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial manufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines, fragments of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern capital and production. While Blended Complexities is depicted as a mapping of connectivity through corn, it acts as a broader critique of system relationality and how diverse material items (and the economies surrounding them) are fundamentally linked.

Abstract:

Due to the increased popularity of 3D immersive visual communication in augmented and virtual reality applications, as well as 3D sensing for digital tunes and auto-driving, the interest in capturing high resolution real-world point clouds has grown significantly in recent years. Point cloud is a new class of signal that is non-uniform and sparse and this present unique challenges to the signal processing, compression and learning problems. In this talk, we present our multi-scale sparse convolutional learning and Graph Frourier Transform (GFT) based framework for large scale point cloud processing, with applications to the geometry and attributes super-resolution, and dynamic point cloud compression with latent space compensation. The architecture is memory efficient and can learn a deep networks to handle large scale point cloud in real world applications. Initial results demonstrated that this framework achieved new state of the art results in geometry super-resolution, attributes deblocking and super-resolving, and dynamic point cloud sequence compression, and is adopted in the MPEG AI based point cloud coding framework.

Bio:

Zhu Li is a professor with the Dept of Computer Science & Electrical Engineering, University of Missouri, Kansas City(UMKC), and the director of NSF I/UCRC Center for Big Learning (CBL) at UMKC. He received his PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Northwestern University in 2004. He was the AFRL summer faculty at the UAV Research Center, US Air Force Academy (USAFA), 2016-18, 2020-24. He was Senior Staff Researcher with the Samsung Research America's Multimedia Standards Research Lab in Richardson, TX, 2012-2015, Senior Staff Researcher with FutureWei (Huawei) Technology's Media Lab in Bridgewater, NJ, 2010~2012, Assistant Professor with the Dept of Computing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 2008 to 2010, and a Principal Staff Research Engineer with the Multimedia Research Lab (MRL), Motorola Labs, from 2000 to 2008. His research interests include point cloud and light field compression, graph signal processing and deep learning in the next gen visual compression, remote sensing, image processing and understanding. He has 70+ issued or pending patents, 200+ publications in book chapters, journals, and conferences in these areas. He is an IEEE senior member, Associate Editor-in-Chief (2020~23) and Senior Area Editor (2024~) for IEEE Trans on Circuits & System for Video Tech, Associate Editor for IEEE Trans on Image Processing(2020~), IEEE Trans.on Multimedia (2015-18), IEEE Trans on Circuits & System for Video Technology(2016-19). His team won the AFRL sponsored Perception Beyond Visual Spectrum (PBVS) grand challenge at CVPR 2023 on SAR image recognition, and thermo image super-resolution in 2024. He also received the Best Paper Award at IEEE Int'l Conf on Multimedia & Expo (ICME), Toronto, 2006, and IEEE Int'l Conf on Image Processing (ICIP), San Antonio, 2007.

About the speaker:

Ross Perlin, Lecturer, Department of Slavic Languages, Columbia University, is co-director of the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA), a non-profit research institute focused on documenting and supporting endangered languages in New York City and beyond. At ELA since 2013, he directed the creation of the Languages of New York City map (www.languagemap.nyc) and has managed a variety of projects focused on language documentation, language policy, and public programming around urban linguistic diversity. Himalayan languages are a research focus — for his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Bern, Ross created a trilingual dictionary, a corpus of recordings, and a descriptive grammar of Trung, an endangered language of southwest China, based on several years of fieldwork. Ross has a BA from Stanford, an M.Phil. from Cambridge, and an MA from the University of London (SOAS). Ross is also a writer and translator, whose work has appeared in the New York Times, The Guardian, Harper's, The Atlantic, and elsewhere. His most recent book is Language City: The Fight to Preserve Endangered Mother Tongues in New York, published in 2024 by Grove.

Biography:

Claire Becker is an ABD History PhD candidate at the University of Rochester. Their dissertation explores the varied ways religious women used sacred objects (e.g. relics, sculptures, paintings, rosary beads, food items) to develop and disseminate knowledge about the divine, the body, emotion, and care throughout the early modern Spanish world. Their research has been published in the Journal of Gender & History, and they have contributed book reviews to the Sixteenth Century Journal and Renaissance Quarterly. They have taught classes ranging from freshman writing to western civilization both on the University of Rochester campus and in Attica Correctional facility. In addition to researching, writing, teaching, and organizing conferences (including the upcoming Vagantes Conference on Medieval Studies), Claire serves as the Writing and Speaking coordinator for the University of Rochester’s Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program and as a graduate library assistant for the Rossell Hope Robbins Library.

Anne Muntges will talk about her work on 9/15, at 3pm, in Sage Art Center (sculpture space). A reception is to follow from 4-6pm in the gallery. This event is open to all students, faculty, staff, and the greater Rochester community.

Describing their work, the artists say,

Anne Muntges:

Through drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we inhabit, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city and the intimate, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice examines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and our total reliance on the structures, spaces, and strangers around us. Using technical pens and other drawing tools, I translate these transient moments into life-sized environments, turning flat drawings into walkable architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of shared time.

This slow, obsessive drafting process functions as a continuous, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive, overwhelming emotional and environmental weight; for me, the only way to survive it is to build a beautiful, meticulous cage around it with thousands of tiny ink lines. Whether I am documenting the overlooked systems of public maintenance or sorting through the fractured pieces of my own everyday coping mechanisms, I treat the page as a psychological ledger. This fiercely disciplined method gives a profound sense of permanence to the fleeting markers of our surroundings, proving that tracking the invisible upkeep of a city is deeply tied to the daily preservation required to keep a human life in motion.

This investigation moves fluidly between the microscopic and the monumental, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling up to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy, wallpapered paper. By constantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance directly into the surfaces of these objects, I create a crazy, immersive world that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately, this grounded, deeply human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance, creating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay radical, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.

Mizin Shin:

Blended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the industrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The work maps an expansive index of consumption, tracing corn as both a central ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial manufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines, fragments of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern capital and production. While Blended Complexities is depicted as a mapping of connectivity through corn, it acts as a broader critique of system relationality and how diverse material items (and the economies surrounding them) are fundamentally linked.

More about the artists:

Anne Muntges (b. 1982) earned her BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2005 and her MFA in Printmaking from the University at Buffalo in 2008. Based in Brooklyn, she focuses on highly detailed drawings, prints, and installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo. Most recently, her work is featured in Monumental Drawing at the More Museum in Gorssel, NL. Muntges’ art is held in collections such as the California College of the Arts, the Library of Congress, the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Among her numerous accolades, she was awarded the NYFA/NYSCA Fellowship in 2014, Sustainable Arts Finalist in 2021, and Interlude Grantee. Since 2010, she has participated in prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BRIC, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Monira Foundation Artist Residency.

Born and raised in South Korea, Mizin Shin is a US-based visual artist. Regularly leading printmaking workshops with collaborating art organizations, Shin focuses on both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the medium. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions across the United States, Belgium, Spain, the UK, India, and South Korea. She was a juror for The Paths We Cross: Perspectives from the Korean Diaspora, 2022 Screenprint Biennial, and 2021 Southern Tier Biennial. Shin is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; the University of Rochester Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship; the Andrew & Barbara Choi Foundation Project Grant; and Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.Mizin Shin graduated from Hong-ik University with a B.F.A in Printmaking and received her M.F.A from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester as well as a co-founder of Mirabo Press in Buffalo, NY. She has served as a board member of the Mid-America Print Council and vice president of the Print Club of Rochester from 2020–22, and a board member of Visual Studies Workshop from 2023-25. Recently, Shin has published TeachPrint.com—a free resource of hypermedia educational materials for school teachers to promote printmaking in art classrooms.

Shiqian Ma
Professor in the Data Science and AI Institute, the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Abstract: The empirical success of large language model (LLM) pre-training relies heavily on heuristic stabilization techniques, such as explicit normalization layers and weight decay. While recent constrained optimization approaches that explicitly restrict weights may improve numerical stability and performance, the mechanism and motivation for adding constraints still remain elusive. In this work, we systematically demystify the role of explicit manifold constraints in LLM pre-training. By introducing the Msign-Aligned Constrained Riemannian Optimizer (MACRO) -- a provably convergent, single-loop optimization framework -- our study disentangles weight regularization heuristics from interacting mechanisms like RMS normalization and decoupled weight decay. Theoretical analyses and comprehensive empirical evaluations reveal that manifold constraints independently bound forward activation scales and enforce stable rotational equilibrium, thereby subsuming the roles of these heuristic mechanisms. Evaluations on large-scale LLM architectures demonstrate that MACRO achieves highly competitive performance.

Bio: Shiqian Ma is a Professor in the Data Science and AI Institute, the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on the mathematical foundations of modern AI, with particular emphasis on optimization, geometry, and machine learning. He develops scalable optimization algorithms and mathematical frameworks for efficient and reliable training of foundation models and large-scale machine learning systems. Ma currently serves as an Action Editor for the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) and Transactions on Machine Learning Research (TMLR), and as an Associate Editor for SIAM Journal on Optimization (SIOPT) and Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications (JOTA). He has served as a Senior Area Chair for NeurIPS, ICML, and AISTATS, among other leading machine learning conferences. His research is supported by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. His work on Riemannian optimization has been recognized by the 2024 INFORMS Computing Society Prize and the 2024 SIAM Review SIGEST Award.

Larry Guttmacher is a Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychiatry and Health Humanities and Bioethics. At various times, his Rochester career has included two tours as Residency Director in Psychiatry, time as the Biopsychosocial Medicine course director, time as one of the original Advisory Deans in the medical school, and service as the Clinical Director at the Rochester Psychiatric Center. He suffers from a previously undescribed genetic disorder where many members of his family end up as psychiatrists, hence the HHBE Grand Rounds.

Describing their work, the artists say,

Anne Muntges:

Through drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we inhabit, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city and the intimate, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice examines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and our total reliance on the structures, spaces, and strangers around us. Using technical pens and other drawing tools, I translate these transient moments into life-sized environments, turning flat drawings into walkable architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of shared time.

This slow, obsessive drafting process functions as a continuous, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive, overwhelming emotional and environmental weight; for me, the only way to survive it is to build a beautiful, meticulous cage around it with thousands of tiny ink lines. Whether I am documenting the overlooked systems of public maintenance or sorting through the fractured pieces of my own everyday coping mechanisms, I treat the page as a psychological ledger. This fiercely disciplined method gives a profound sense of permanence to the fleeting markers of our surroundings, proving that tracking the invisible upkeep of a city is deeply tied to the daily preservation required to keep a human life in motion.

This investigation moves fluidly between the microscopic and the monumental, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling up to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy, wallpapered paper. By constantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance directly into the surfaces of these objects, I create a crazy, immersive world that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately, this grounded, deeply human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance, creating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay radical, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.

Mizin Shin:

Blended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the industrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The work maps an expansive index of consumption, tracing corn as both a central ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial manufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines, fragments of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern capital and production. While Blended Complexities is depicted as a mapping of connectivity through corn, it acts as a broader critique of system relationality and how diverse material items (and the economies surrounding them) are fundamentally linked.

Anne Muntges (b. 1982) earned her BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2005 and her MFA in Printmaking from the University at Buffalo in 2008. Based in Brooklyn, she focuses on highly detailed drawings, prints, and installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo. Most recently, her work is featured in Monumental Drawing at the More Museum in Gorssel, NL. Muntges’ art is held in collections such as the California College of the Arts, the Library of Congress, the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Among her numerous accolades, she was awarded the NYFA/NYSCA Fellowship in 2014, Sustainable Arts Finalist in 2021, and Interlude Grantee. Since 2010, she has participated in prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BRIC, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Monira Foundation Artist Residency.

Born and raised in South Korea, Mizin Shin is a US-based visual artist. Regularly leading printmaking workshops with collaborating art organizations, Shin focuses on both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while promoting a multidisciplinary approach to the medium. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions across the United States, Belgium, Spain, the UK, India, and South Korea. She was a juror for The Paths We Cross: Perspectives from the Korean Diaspora, 2022 Screenprint Biennial, and 2021 Southern Tier Biennial. Shin is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship; the University of Rochester Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship; the Andrew & Barbara Choi Foundation Project Grant; and Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.Mizin Shin graduated from Hong-ik University with a B.F.A in Printmaking and received her M.F.A from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester as well as a co-founder of Mirabo Press in Buffalo, NY. She has served as a board member of the Mid-America Print Council and vice president of the Print Club of Rochester from 2020–22, and a board member of Visual Studies Workshop from 2023-25. Recently, Shin has published TeachPrint.com—a free resource of hypermedia educational materials for school teachers to promote printmaking in art classrooms.

In 1901, Lizzie Black Kander put together a cookbook based on the classes she taught at the Milwaukee Jewish Mission. “I was trying to teach a group of young foreign girls in a crowded neighborhood how to cook simple and nutritious food, yet have it attractive and inexpensive as we prepare it in America,” she recalled. The Settlement Cook Book would go on to be the most successful charitable cookbook in American history, remaining a best-seller into the 1970s. Despite including nonkosher recipes, it became a mainstay in Jewish kitchens and an enduring touchstone of Jewish American culture.

Recipes for the Melting Pot tells the remarkable story of The Settlement Cook Book, demonstrating how it shaped Jewish American identity—and was in turn shaped by generations of Jewish women. Nora L. Rubel traces the cookbook’s evolution across forty editions over several decades, through waves of immigration, shifting gender roles, upward mobility, suburbanization, and rapid changes in Jewish life. She argues that the book celebrates pluralism, allowing it to serve at once as a tool for Americanization, a repository of tradition, and a platform for culinary innovation. Ultimately, The Settlement Cook Book is a record of American Jewish women’s history, told through the food they made and the lives they led. A cultural biography of an iconic cookbook, this lively and inviting book shares an inclusive vision of American cuisine.

Nora L. Rubel is the Elizabeth Denio Professor at the University of Rochester in the Department of Religion & Classics. Families in the United States experience child abuse investigations, the removal of children from their homes, and the termination of parental rights at higher rates than peer countries. Yet this does not make them safer and comes at a cost. Why do Americans accept a system that has made parenting precarious, and what does it mean for struggling families to live under the constant threat of separation? A conversation between the author, two community advocates and leaders, and a lived experience expert who work to improve the lives of Rochester children and families.

Lecture by Laurent Dubreuil, Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences, Cornell Uni.

Taking as a point of departure the definition of language and meaning used in the Large Language Models (LLMs) that ushered in the current phase of generative artificial intelligence, Laurent Dubreuil examines the theoretical assumptions underlying contemporary AI. He briefly demonstrates that fundamental AI operations and hypotheses, such as tokenization and word embedding, are, beyond their engineering dimensions, deeply dependent on theoretical decisions concerning the epistemic status of language. These approaches crystallized in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and stemmed largely from literature and the humanities. In AI research, as elsewhere, the technical translates the theoretical. Whether consciously or not, today’s LLM and deep learning practitioners are as indebted to philology and philosophy as they are to mathematics and early computer science. Dubreuil’s aim is not to argue that scholarship must be “given due credit,” but rather to demonstrate that future advances in AI are necessarily connected to speculative research, particularly in the humanities.

Guest Speaker: Christi A. Patten, PhD, Director, Rural Health Research Core, Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science

Patten is a licensed clinical psychologist, professor of Psychology, and director of the Behavioral Health Research Program within the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She also serves as director of the Rural Health Research Core within the Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science. Her research uses community-based participatory approaches to create culturally aligned smoking cessation and other health promotion interventions for Indigenous and rural communities. Through community engagement, her team has developed innovative strategies to support digital health engagement among rural populations.

In the years leading up to 1830, French dramatists increasingly contested the conventions that had governed serious theater since the seventeenth century. Critics such as Stendhal called for subjects drawn from modern life, and a number of playwrights experimented with freer dramatic forms, new protagonists and different kinds of conflicts. Although Victor Hugo's Hernani would become the movement's most iconic stage production, Georges Ozaneaux's Le Nègre broadened the scope of the Romantic challenge by placing chattel slavery and the slave trade at the center of a serious drama. Staged at the Comédie-Française, France's premier repertory theater, the play drew on many of the features associated with Romantic drama—freer verse, expanded settings, and marginalized protagonists—but used them to explore the consequences of human bondage rather than the types of personal conflict that more often occupied the Romantic stage.
