The Spelling Bee involves students in grades 3 through 6 from Dr. Walter Cooper Academy School No. 10, John Walton Spencer School No. 16, Dr. Charles T. Lunsford School No. 19, Adlai E. Stevenson School No. 29, and Lincoln Park School 44. Each school selects 2 finalists and one alternate per grade.
The event is a partnership of the city of Rochester’s 19th Ward Community Association, Rochester Area Community Foundation, the University of Rochester Admissions Office, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity at the University of Rochester, the Rochester City School District, and the Arnett Branch Library.
The winners in each grade level are awarded a trophy, and a $500 scholarship to be awarded when the student goes to college. A fund established at the Community Foundation supports the scholarships.
