A lecture by Pierre Saint-Amand, Yale University Professor.

Inspired by abolitionist Abbé Raynal, Pigault-Lebrun writes Le Blanc et le Noir (1795) to denounce, he says, the “system of slavery.” Set in a plantation in Le Cap, Saint-Domingue, this forgotten play crosses a family dispute between father and son with a revolt by the slaves of the plantation to obtain freedom. Several clashes are examined: between colonists and proponents of the Enlightenment, Blacks and Whites. Who will put an end to the violence?
