Pre Conference: May 9 - One Voice Dental Pre-Conference
Conference: May 10-12 - AADMD One Voice Conference
The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is hosting the 17th annual American Academy of Developmental Medicine & Dentistry One Voice Conference on May 9-12. Led by Stephen Sulkes, M.D., president of AADMD and professor of Pediatrics at URMC, the event is the preeminent conference for physicians, dentists, and other providers who treat patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
AADMD One Voice Conference - a resource for healthcare provider training & education
“Our annual conference is focused on disseminating information on what is working clinically, and helping practitioners get more comfortable with working with patients with disabilities,” said Sulkes. “But it also has an advocacy component: We hope to bring together leaders in clinical care to discuss how we can reverse the health disparities that affect many of these individuals and improve the care they receive.”
In addition to its educational mission, AADMD works with several other national partners, to advocate for the best health across the lifespan for people with disabilities and to ensure that no person with IDD is left without access to quality health services.
“It’s well-documented that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have some significant disparities in terms of their health,” said Sulkes. “And while some of these disparities can be explained by co-morbidities that occur along with their disability conditions, these people also experience inequities within the system — such as having to travel long distances to find a provider who is comfortable treating them, if they can find one at all.”
