Frontispace is pleased to announce an exhibition of work created by current UR students who participated in the Art New York Program last spring. The exhibition represents the culmination of the time the students spent living, working, and studying and producing art in New York City. Spanning a variety of media, the works on view utilize the resources of New York City as a starting point for creative production and explore both personal and collective ideas.

The Art New York program is an internship program that is exclusive to the University of Rochester. It is offered to all qualified sophomore, junior, and senior students from any area of study who are interested in learning about how art gets made, how it reaches the public, and the process of its interpretation and display. Students have the opportunity to experience New York’s rich and varied cultural life while pursuing a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience.

In the spring of 2019, the Art New York students participated in a variety of activities, from visits to museums such as the Guggenheim, the Met, and PS1 to a tour of design firm Rapt Studio. Accompanied by UR faculty, they engaged in discussions with curators, designers, and other art professionals. Meanwhile, students gained valuable hands-on experience through internships at Studio Institute, Mesh, and Maison de Papillon, and in the personal studios of professional artists Luca Buvoli, Vanessa Albury, and Dannielle Tegeder.

The semester was rounded out by a studio class in which students channeled their experiences of the city and their personal research to complete five art projects. Prompts included creating conceptual maps of the students’ surroundings, using field recordings to produce transformative soundscapes, and developing proposals for large-scale public art installations and sites around the city. Selections from these projects and more make up the works on display at Frontispace.

The spring 2019 participants in the Art New York Program were Sylvia Anderson, Jasmine Benjamin, Vivian Chan, Harry Ma, Jong-Sun Mayele, Angel Qin, TianYu Wang, and Valerie Wang, under the leadership of the Director, Peter Christensen, and the Manager, Megan Metté.

The exhibition runs September 11 thru September 26 with a reception for the students on September 18 from 6pm to 9pm.
