Join us for a public tour of Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence led by MAG Curator in Charge/Curator of American Art Jessica Marten and MAG McPherson Director of Academic Programs Dr. Nile K. Blunt. This exhibition, on view in the Docent Gallery from July 17 through October 23, showcases a new form of bead art developed by a community of women living and working together in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Ubuhle means “beauty” in the Xhosa and Zulu languages, and it describes the shimmering quality of light on glass that, for the Xhosa people, has a particular spiritual significance.
