Aviva Goldberg, Section Head of Pediatrics Nephrology, Department of Pediatrics & Child Health at the University of Manitoba, will discuss situations in which parents or children hope for miracles when facing serious diagnosis or progression of their disease and how to ethically manage such situations in pediatric care.

At the conclusion of this presentation participants should be able to:

1. Explore how the language of miracles is used by families and pediatric health care providers.

2. Assess how this language can both help and hinder communication and decision-making for critically ill children.

3. Employ an ethical framework to communicate with families in a manner that respects their faith and perspective while also allowing for the best possible medical care for their children
