The Changing Perspectives Through the Arts series is a collaboration of The Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics, Eastman Performing Arts Medicine, and Rochester community organizations. Each month, typically on the second Friday, we host artists who share how their work helps to facilitate difficult conversations, and how art can be a catalyst for changing perspectives.

All sessions will be hosted on zoom, and when possible, also hosted live in K207 of the Medical School.

CME is available for these events. Please indicate on the zoom registration that you are requesting credit.

November 11 - Dalton LaBarge - On Wampum and the Paths of Healing

Historic and modern discrimination have contributed to present day health disparities for LGBTQ+ older adults which were exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

We are told that long ago Onekò:rha (wampum) were gifted to our people as a means of absolving one
another of grief. Contained in these strands and belts are original instructions that remind us of our
mutual rights and responsibilities towards one another and all of creation. This session will explore
how our wampum are a living practice; an intersection of material craft, storytelling, and the
continuous restoration of what it means to heal as individuals and communities.
