Abstract: Ultrasound tomography (UST) is a new imaging modality based on solving the acoustic wave equation. An overview of the technique is presented, including a discussion of the underlying theory, description of the fast, highly parallelized data acquisition system, the data processing chain, the GPU-based computing engine, and the image reconstruction algorithm.

The efficacy of UST in a clinical setting was tested through a series of clinical trials, culminating in a recently completed, multi-center, national trial. The results from these studies, relating to breast cancer detection, risk assessment, and treatment monitoring are presented.

The challenges of translating UST from bench to bedside and the associated commercialization of the technology are described. Finally, future prospects for applications of UST and potential local collaborations are also discussed.
