DESCRIPTION:Despite the remarkable success of cochlear implantation (CI) fo
 r speech perception\, the ability to perceive music remains extremely limi
 ted in most CI users. These limitations can be attributed primarily to fun
 damental deficits in implant-mediated processing of music that lead to sev
 ere impairments in pitch and timbre perception as well as deteriorations i
 n overall sound quality. Furthermore\, central auditory processing mechani
 sms in CI users for music differ than those of normal hearing listeners. T
 his presentation will discuss recent findings regarding perception of musi
 c in cochlear implant users from a variety of scientific approaches. In ad
 dition\, the presentation will consider the important issue of what is nee
 ded to improve music perception for CI users.\n\nSpeaker Dr. Charles Limb 
 is the Francis A. Sooy\, MD Professor and Chief of Otology/Neurotology and
  Skull Base Surgery at the University of California\, San Francisco\, and 
 he's a Faculty Member at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. He combines hi
 s two passions to study the way the brain creates and perceives music. He'
 s a hearing specialist and surgeon at Johns Hopkins who performs cochlear 
 implantations on patients who have lost their hearing. And he plays sax\, 
 piano and bass.\n\nThis presentation and Dr. Limb's visit to Rochester\, i
 ncluding the presentation on 10/8 at 6pm at the Rochester Academy of Medic
 ine's Sid Sobel Lectureship Series is jointly supported by the SMD Departm
 ent of Health Humanities and Bioethics and the Eastman Performing Arts Med
