About this Event
Featuring: Jonathan Binstock, Mary W. and Donald R. Clark Director, Memorial Art Gallery
Join Jonathan Binstock, the Memorial Art Gallery’s Mary W. and Donald R. Clark Director, for a live pre-screening conversation about LESSONS OF THE HOUR—FREDERICK DOUGLASS. Then, enjoy a special virtual viewing of this MAG-commissioned work of media art by artist Isaac Julien. LESSONS OF THE HOUR is a meditation on the life, words, and actions of Frederick Douglass, the visionary African American abolitionist and freed slave. Through extensive use of Douglass’ “timely words,” Julien gives expression to the zeitgeist of Douglass’ era, his legacy, and the ways in which his story may be viewed today.
LESSONS OF THE HOUR will be viewable exclusively for the University community at home from August 20-23, 2020. A link to view a single-screen version of the work will be included in the reminder email you will receive the morning of the conversation.
