In the fifty years since Shostakovich's death, his music is increasingly relevant and more alive than ever. In a series of five concerts during the week of September 22, Eastman joins communities around the world in celebrating the music of Shostakovich in the fiftieth anniversary year of his death (1975).

The inspiration for this week came form Professor Mikhail Kopelman, whose recital of Shostakovich string quartets and a piano trio will be performed on Shostakovich's birthdate, September 25. Professor Alexander Kobrin's reictal will feature the three piano and string sonatas, Eastman Virtuosi will feature the Piano Quintet, plus solo piano music performed by Professor Marina Lomazov, and a clarient trio by Shostakovich's most beloved student, Galina Ustvolskaya. In addition, two Shostakovich symphonies will be performed by Eastman's ensembles.
