https://www.gatewaysmusicfestival.org/events-calendarIn the future, after climate change has ravaged the planet, only a few people remain, and they have forgotten their history. To know where they have come from, they rely on an AI that retells the past differently, adapting it to each person in order to help them survive in this harsh new world. History becomes fluid, ever-changing like a dreamscape.
"Seasons of Change" is a recomposition of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, serving as the frame for an Afrofuturist meditation and dreamscape on climate change, class, and the nature of digital memory. The performance blends classical forms with contemporary, often fragmented, digital soundscapes to explore the question: Who will climate change erase first?
Earlier in the year, Eastman alum, two-time Grammy nominee, and Artistic Director of the American Composers Orchestra Curtis Stewart came to Rochester to engage directly with the community. Through conversations and interviews, including with the unhoused population, he captured voices and stories that will be woven into this performance. Their reflections form the emotional core of the piece.
The program includes four movements—A.Recent.Summer, Fallback, Again., and Life Times. Each movement reimagines Vivaldi’s seasonal transitions through the lens of climate change, asking how we survive amidst constant upheaval—when seasons, memories, and realities are continuously shifting.
