Mobility, Factors and Facilitators: Falls Risk with Hip Fracture Focus
Kanakadurga R. Poduri, MD, Chair Emerita and Professor, Physical Medicine and Rehab and Neurology, URMC
Approximately a third of older adults over the age of 65 experience falls and 24% of those who fall sustain fractures which results in activity restriction. Several clinical indicators of balance, mobility, neurological deficits and joint flexibility are associated with functional performance. Evidence supports that moderate intensity exercise-based intervention to improve balance and functional mobility can reduce or prevent falls and thereby reduce fall related injuries.
