Conducting Effective Family Meetings
Carol Podgorski, PhD, MPH, MS, Associate Professor, Psychiatry, URMC
The complexity of medical needs, frequency of reliance on surrogate decision-makers, and prognostic uncertainty of older veterans necessitate the use of effective communication skills in conducting a family meeting. This presentation will review strategies that may be used in conducting family meetings, including utilizing a step-by-step process that acknowledge emotions and facilitates shared decision making. Participants will also learn how to role model these behaviors and provide feedback to team members regarding family discussion in order to ensure proper patient-centered and family-centered care.
