A Modern Approach to Delirium: Delirium Disorder and the Great Unlearning

Mark A. Oldham, MD, Assistant Professor, Dept of Psychiatry, URMC

Although interest in delirium continues to expand around the globe, the science and clinical practice of delirium remain largely unchanged. This presentation will review several deficiencies in the prevailing model of delirium and consider how these may be preventing the delirium field from advancing. Dr. Oldham will introduce the model of delirium disorder, which represents a modern re-conceptualization of delirium; he will explore how this model encourages a comprehensive clinical approach to delirium and invites novel neuroscientific approaches.
