Elder abuse and neglect are common and have severe consequences. The medical encounter is a potentially important opportunity to detect and intervene, but providers seldom identify or report. Forensic research distinguishing between injury patterns in physical elder abuse and unintentional falls may assist in identification. A team-based approach is critical in identifying elder abuse in the clinical environment, with potentially important roles for EMS and ED radiology. Developing an ED-based multi-disciplinary Vulnerable Elder Protection Team (VEPT) to consult and assess, treat, and ensure the safety of elder abuse and neglect victims may reduce the burden on busy providers while improving care for older adults. Though little is currently known about elder abuse forensics, there are things you can look for when you next work clinically.
