Assistive Technology for Mobility for the Geriatric Patient
Marcia Scherer, PhD, MPH, FACRM, President, Institute for Matching Person & Technology
According to the World Health Organization, assistive products maintain or improve an individual’s functioning and independence. Hearing aids, wheelchairs, communication aids, pill organizers and memory aids are all examples of assistive products. Assistive technology has been named a global priority of the WHO (May 2018 resolution) because of the growing population of aging individuals and those with disabilities. There are over 50,000 available assistive products in the marketplace and the number and variety are continually growing. This can make finding the best option for an individual challenging. This presentation will provide a systematic, evidence-based, process for successfully matching person and technology.
