Geriatric Medicine Grand Rounds

"Medical Direction in Assisted Living: How a Pandemic Helped Define a Role," presented by Dallas Nelson, MD and Sarah Howd, MD

The growing medical complexity of residents of assisted living facilities (ALF), combined with the increased need for infection control expertise, makes it a good time to introduce medical direction to the ALF community. This session will look at the development and implementation of an ALF medical direction program in the Rochester, NY, region. The COVID 19 pandemic has illustrated how medical direction in the ALF can have a positive impact in the functioning of the facility and the quality of care of its residents. The session also will review the need for an expert medical advisor historically in ALF, discuss how COVID 19 helped define the role of ALF medical director, and propose an approach to implementation of the role across the country.
