Surveying book production from late Antiquity through the Middle Ages (ca. 300–1500) in Europe and the Near East, this workshop will examine the historical, material, and theoretical issues raised by the book as physical object, such as the materials and methods of book production, the historical and economic circumstances that influence production, the dissemination of books across cultures and time, and the diverse reading practices of book owners. The workshop will be led by Dr. Ilya Dines, Manuscript Specialist for the Library of Congress.
The workshop is free and open to all graduate students and faculty at the University of Rochester and other CNY Humanities Corridor institutions.
