This talk introduces the thermodynamic formalism of Fibonacci substitution systems and their renormalization structure. We focus on a simplified setting of the renormalization operator acting on potentials, where the attractor is the periodic sequence 010010010.... This toy model captures key features of the full system and lays the groundwork for the general proposition. It already reveals the essential mechanism behind the emergence of quasi-crystalline ground states via freezing phase transitions.
