Health Bites: Substance Use Disorders - The Ongoing Epidemic in the Midst of COVID-19

Patrick Seche, M.S., CASAC
Patrick Seche is a Senior Associate in the Department of Psychiatry and the Senior Director of Addiction Services for Strong Recovery (Part of Strong Memorial Hospital) at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Substance Use Disorder continues to be one of the top healthcare problems in America. It starts at a very young age and impacts millions of households with most families reporting having at least one family member actively using/abusing substances or being in recovery from a substance use disorder. As we continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, we must continue to increase efforts to prevent deaths from substance use disorders and support pathways to recovery. Addressing this ongoing epidemic starts with everyone having a better understanding of the signs and symptoms, and increased knowledge of the available treatment options. Being informed helps reduce the stigma associated with this disease and removes barriers to treatment and recovery.
