About this Event
In this interactive presentation, we will heighten our Critical Language Awareness (Fairclough, 2014) by discussing the role of language plays in perpetuating social (and racial) inequality. We will consider how we can resist inequality by shifting our linguistic attitudes, expectations, and practices, including in the college classroom. I will first introduce several concepts from sociolinguistics that help us understand how language, identity, and power are interconnected. We will then explore how those concepts apply to a variety of communicative situations, including our own interpersonal interactions on campus and in the community. Finally, we will discuss how we might be more intentional in our use and interpretation of language, in order to promote inclusion and social justice within the academy and beyond.
This event is co-sponsored by the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program and the Humanities Center at the University of Rochester.
