DEAR STEPHEN: An Autographic Journey through the 20th Century

Join us to hear Kathryn Wilson speak about the newly-acquired Stephen May collection of over 1400 autographs and letters.

As a teen in the 1940s, Stephen May wrote to men and women known for their achievements in science, literature, government, and education. As an adult, he served on the Rochester City Council, and was Rochester mayor from 1970 to 1973 and continued his public service in Washington, D.C.

Stephen May was a true Rochesterian: the son of University of Rochester professor of history Arthur J. May, he served on the Rochester City Council, and was Rochester mayor from 1970 to 1973. As a teen in the 1940s, Stephen May wrote to men and women known for their achievements in science, literature, government, and education.

Independent researcher Wilson will introduce the collection, explore the cultural and political events of the mid-20th century reflected in the letters, the business of autograph collecting, and the research possibilities of the materials.
