Come celebrate the Arthur Satz Department of Music with a dedication ceremony and concert in Strong Auditorium on Saturday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. This concert not only recognizes Arthur Satz’s gift—the largest endowed gift ever in support of the humanities at the University of Rochester—but it also marks the debut concert for Dr. Mark Powell, our new Director of Orchestral Activities. Under Powell’s direction, the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra and the University of Rochester Chamber Orchestra will celebrate Arthur Satz’s legacy by performing works of Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler, Joan Tower, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In 2021, Arthur Satz’s transformational generosity established the school’s first named department—the Arthur Satz Department of Music—and provided funding to support several professorships in humanities-related fields. Satz (’51) was a Fulbright scholar and a faculty member in the music departments at Yale University and Vassar College. While at Rochester, Satz was a carillonneur and an active member of the Glee Club. He started playing the piano as a child and continued throughout college and the rest of his life.
