Extreme Risk Protection Orders: A New Gun Violence Prevention Tool for Healthcare

Firearm-related injuries are the leading cause of death among U.S. youth aged 1-19 years. Extreme risk protection orders (ERPO), known as red flag laws, are a prevention tool that has effectively prevented suicide, intimate partner homicide, and mass shootings, including school shootings. ERPO is a civil court order that temporarily prevents a person at extreme risk of harming themselves or others and who is behaving dangerously from possessing or purchasing firearms. This session will explain ERPOs and the application process.
