Brewster is a Canadian visual artist based in Toronto, who will be joining us virtually. She engages with themes including identity, representation, and memory, centering on a Black presence. Her meditations on being and place are expressed within her drawings, video, and photo-based mixed media works.
Light refreshments will be served following the talk. Capacity is limited to 40.
Her exhibition Precious Sense is on view at the Hartnett Gallery in Wilson Commons from, February 2 through February 20.
About the exhibition: Gestural portraits made with photo-based gel transfers function as a metaphor for movement or change from one place to another, specifically in reference to be the migration of the artist's parents and their peers who left Goyana for Toronto in the late 1960s.
The program is part of the 2021-22 Sawyer Seminar series "Unbordering Migration in the Americas," an interdisciplinary exploration into the movement of peoples in the Western Hemisphere, both past and present, with an emphasis on issues of social justice.
Supported by an award from the Andrew Mellon Foundation. Cosponsored by the Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African American Studies.
