One Health Initiative in Borneo: Transforming Community Health & Saving Endangered Orangutans

Jeff Wyatt DVM, MPH, DACLAM, Professor  & Chair, Comparative Medicine, URMC

The interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health requires a multi-disciplinary approach to heal our degraded ecosystem. A One-Health initiative in Indonesian Borneo accomplished by listening to local communities and advanced by URSMD veterinarians and physicians has, in only ten years, reversed poverty, transformed public health, and saved the rainforest home of 2,500 of the world’s last orangutans. This proof of concept is well-positioned for replication globally.
