Susan Gustafson and Kristina Becker will discuss the history of the translation of Goethe’s play, Stella: A Play for Lovers, and how “disturbing” (for the time period) and challenging depictions of a ménage à trois and of the love between two women were masked over or eliminated, both in translations of that time period and in the 1990’s. They will also discuss their own translation of the play and adjustments and challenges they faced as they strove to present the play in English as closely as possible to Goethe’s original version of the play in 1776.
