The School of Nursing invites faculty, staff and students to attend a special presentation by Kathi Heffner, PhD and Kimberly Van Orden, PhD, "The Rochester Roybal Center for Social Ties & Aging Research: The STAR Center"
Dr. Heffner is Associate Professor of Nursing, Medicine, and Psychiatry, Associate Chief of Research for the Division of Geriatrics & Aging, Director of the Stress & Aging Research Laboratory, and co-Director of the Elaine Hubbard Center for Nursing Research on Aging. Her research interests include the effects of caregiver stress on immune aging, the role of poor sleep in older adults’ physiological stress and pain, and the role of social relationships in older adults’ stress and healthy aging.
Dr. Van Orden is Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the Helping Older People Engage (HOPE) Lab, and Associate Director of the NIMH-funded T32 Postdoctoral Training in Suicide Prevention Research in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Van Orden is focused on understanding the different ways social isolation (both perceived and 'objective') is expressed and experienced in later life, and developing behavioral interventions that reduce isolation and promote social connectedness for healthy aging.
