Undergraduate research can be a transformative part of a student’s education, providing an opportunity to move beyond the classroom and learn how new mathematics and science are actually discovered. For nearly a decade, Alex Iosevich and Azita Mayeli, with the generous assistance of numerous faculty members, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, staff, and other colleagues from the University of Rochester and partner institutions, have organized StemForAll, a research apprenticeship program for undergraduate students and advanced high school students. The program has grown substantially over the years, bringing together students and mentors to work on open-ended projects in mathematics, data science, physics, biology, and related fields. Previous participants have gone on to graduate and Ph.D. programs, research careers, and other STEM professions, demonstrating the lasting value of giving young scholars meaningful access to research at an early stage of their education.
