Gavin Gray is a bassist from West Hartford, Connecticut. He started studying classical bass with Susan Powell, and currently studies jazz performance with Jeff Campbell. In high school, Gavin was assistant principal in the All Nationals Symphony Orchestra, a National YoungArts Jazz winner, recipient of the Essentially Ellington Outstanding Bassist award, and a member of the 2019 Vail Jazz Workshop where he had the opportunity to study with the great John Clayton. Most recently he was selected as a member of the 2021 Jazz at Aspen Snowmass Big Band directed by Christian McBride. Gavin has had the opportunity to perform with artists such as Ingrid Jensen, Marshall Gilkes, Christian McBride, Sherman Irby, Ted Nash, Elliot Mason, the New York Voices, Alexa Tarantino, Bobby Militello, Clay Jenkins, Rich Thompson and others in such esteemed venues as the Vail Jazz Festival, Dizzys Club Coca Cola, Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Hall, the Las Crucez Juneteenth jazz festival and the Jazz at Aspen Snowmass festival. Gavin leads his own quintet which will perform on the main stage at the 2022 Rochester Jazz Festival He is currently in his junior year studying Jazz and Contemporary Media at the Eastman School of Music, and performs in various ensembles in Rochester including the Eastman Jazz Ensemble and Rich Thompson's Trio Generations. He intends to pursue a career as a freelance musician, as well as lead his own band performing original compositions.
