Murphy, MD, of the University at Buffalo will consider approaches to performing research to understand root causes of health inequities and use innovative approaches to test solutions to eliminate health disparities in communities. Examples of how clinical and translational science can be leveraged to advance health equity will be included.
Translational Science Grand Rounds presentations are sponsored by the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
Speaker Bio:
As a physician scientist in infectious diseases, Timothy Murphy, MD conducts research on bacteria that cause otitis media (ear infections) in children and respiratory infections in adults with COPD. His work has been continuously funded by the NIH and has focused on identifying how these bacteria cause disease and developing vaccines to prevent these infections.
In response to a national shortage of clinician scientists, Murphy directs a T35 NIH training grant entitled Training the Next Generation of Clinician Scientists. The program, now funded for 13 years, introduces medical students and pharmacy students to careers as clinician scientists. The goal is to increase the shrinking number of clinician scientists in the U.S. biomedical research workforce.
Murphy is the founding director of the UB Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and PI of the University at Buffalo Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) since it was first funded in 2015. The CTSI provides support and expertise to perform clinical and translational research throughout UB and partner institutions with a vision to improve the health of the community and the nation.
In 2019, UB launched the UB Community Health Equity Research Institute that conducts research that addresses the root causes of these health disparities, while developing and testing innovative solutions to the social determinants of health to eliminate health inequities in the region. Murphy is privileged to serve as Director of the Institute, which includes faculty from 12 UB schools and works closely with community partners.
