For counselors, as for many other helping and educating professionals, quality practice with students or clients depends not only knowledge and expertise, but also on the personhood of the professional. Counselor education has long paid attention to cultivating personal capacities for compassion, presence, communication and the ethics of care in new practitioners during their training. Today that list extends towards fostering the capacity for creativity and improvisation in practice through appreciating and attending to the critical role that experiences drawn from the expressive and performance arts play in developing the capacities of counselors and therapists. In this lunch talk we’ll share how some big artistic ideas apply to the counseling and educating fields and engage you in some easy strategies to briefly experience what engaging with creativity may bring to your own work.
