#LACXIn the early morning of January 3rd, 2026, American military forces bombed a handful of military and civilian infrastructures across Venezuela and captured its president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores. As they were taken to a federal court in New York facing charges of narcoterrorism, Venezuela's Vicepresident, Delcy Ramírez, was left in charge. It is yet unclear what broader changes this intervention will bring: from the status of the oil industry to that of a regime change and the role of the United States in the political and economic life of Venezuela and the region.
The University of Rochester's Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies interdisciplinary major will be hosting a roundtable to provide context on recent current events in Venezuela. Professors Gabriel Hetland (SUNY Albany), Hein Goemans (University of Rochester), and Steven Schwartz (Boston University) discuss what might come next in Venezuela.
