DESCRIPTION:The long-term respiratory health effects of wildfire smoke expo
sure are not well understood. However\, it can be studied by examining its
association with impaired respiratory health\, an intermediate phenotype
between ideal lung health and chronic lung disease. We found that wildfire
smoke is associated with markers of impaired respiratory health\, includi
ng blood biomarkers\, persistent respiratory symptoms\, and accelerated de
cline in lung function\, suggesting potential long-term impact.\n\nPresent
ed by Gabrielle Liu\, MD\, MS\, assistant professor of Medicine\, Universi
ty of California\, Davis. This Translational Science Grand Rounds event is
sponsored and organized by UR CTSI.\n\nLiu is an assistant professor of M
edicine in the Division of Pulmonary\, Critical Care\, and Sleep Medicine
at the University of California\, Davis\, and the associate director of th
eir Interstitial Lung Disease Program. Her research explores the risk fact
ors and biomarkers associated with impaired respiratory health and the tra
nsition to chronic lung disease. Her current work examines the association
between wildfire smoke exposure and markers of impaired respiratory healt
 h. She is a KL2 scholar with the UC Davis Clinical and Translational Scien
ce Center and is supported by the American Lung Association’s Public Hea
lth and Public Policy Research Award.\n\nAccreditation\n\nThe University o
f Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is accredited by the Accredit
ation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continui
ng medical education for physicians.\n\nCertification\n\nThe University of
Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry designates this live activity
for a maximum of 1.00 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians shoul
d claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participatio
 n in the activity.
